Accusations of underreporting
Russia's confirmed coronavirus cases top 200,000

The number of people confirmed to have the coronavirus in Russia has exceeded 200,000, data posted on an official website set up by health authorities showed on Sunday.

The total number of cases increased to 209,688 after another 11,012 tests came back positive in the last 24 hours, it showed.

The official number of people dying of coronavirus-related complications has been comparatively low in Russia at 1,915, though an opposition-allied doctors union has accused authorities of underreporting deaths of medics.

Russia's national figure does not include everyone who died after testing positive, but only those patients whose deaths were confirmed to be caused by viral pneumonia.

More deaths in Moscow

Sunday, 10 05 2020

The total number of deaths registered in Moscow rose sharply in April compared with the same month last year and was also significantly higher than the number officially confirmed as having been caused by the new coronavirus, official data showed.

This raises the possibility that the official death toll from COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus, seriously understates the spread of the virus in the Russian capital.

Many countries are looking at "all-cause mortality" statistics as a guide to understanding the full impact of the virus, as some deaths caused by COVID-19 may go unrecorded, while the death toll from other illnesses may also rise during a time when healthcare systems are under strain.

The data published on Sunday shows Moscow recorded 11,846 deaths in total in April, the first month when the city recorded a large number of deaths caused by COVID-19. That is 18% more deaths than recorded in April 2019.

The new data was first reported by The Moscow Times on Sunday.

The number of deaths compares with just 658 fatalities registered in April as having been caused by COVID-19.

The figure is also up 20% compared with an average of the same month during the previous 10 years, according to the open data published by the Moscow government, which is based on the number of death certificates issued each month.

All those we spoke to asked to remain anonymous because they want to keep their jobs.

"By 3 May lots of residents had a fever and they started dying," the nurse recalled. "I think about eight people died and that's just on my floor."

She believes their "accompanying illnesses" were given as their cause of death, rather than Covid-19. "In our place, no-one does autopsies," she said.

"No-one even told us there was Covid-19 in the home!" an orderly complained bitterly, in a separate call. "We found out when the ambulances came and they were dressed in those suits."

"We sent a lot of people to hospital," she said, and confirmed that other residents had died.

The local governor's office did not respond to a BBC enquiry about fatalities and as of Tuesday Smolensk region had counted just 21 coronavirus fatalities in total.
