Roundtable in Cairo on combating bird flu

afrol News, April 30 - The International Organization for Migration (IOM) will be headed by a roundtable to be held this April 30 in the capital of Egypt, Cairo. The aim of the event in which he will meet government ministries, UN agencies, representatives of civil society and other stakeholders will refine the details of the activities of avian influenza preparedness directed at migrants.

The International Organization for Migration has already launched a three-year program in Egypt similar to that of Cambodia and Viet Nam thanks to support from the Agency for International Development United States (USA) through a fund managed by the Program UN Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the System and the Consolidated Plan of Action for the UN system and its partners.

In Egypt, the programme focuses mainly on the preparation against bird flu response and methods for migrants in urban areas from Sudan living in the province of Cairo. Faced with the possibility that Sudanese migrants returning to Southern Sudan over the conflict, is of paramount importance that they are informed about bird flu and measures to prevent an outbreak of the same.

Also, there will be a baseline study to extract the profile of migrants and identify the virus who have knowledge and practices and beliefs of this group. The information gathered will adapt existing material designed to prepare communities to cope with bird flu, as well as training manuals for community workers, with the aim of strengthening the efforts and the ability of communities to do against a possible outbreak of bird flu.

Moreover, the programme seeks to ensure the welfare of migrants and host communities in the event of an outbreak of the virus.

Egypt presents the highest levels of infection and deaths from avian influenza outside Asia, with 49 confirmed cases, 22 of them resulting in the death of the patient. The most recent case was that of a woman in regular contact with sick or dead birds, who died in April.

So far, bird flu to hit mainly rural areas of Egypt, and although they should not reared birds in urban areas, often people have birds and keeps them mostly on rooftops.
