[FONT=&quot]Medical authorities in Teleorman are on alert after two people have come to hospital West Nile meningitis suspects. It is a 48-year-old woman from Rădeşti commune, and an 18-year-old from Zimnicea.


The two were hospitalized at Roşiorii de Vede and Bucharest hospitals. Physicians took biological samples that they sent for analysis to the Cantacuzino Institute.

If this suspicion is confirmed, specific measures will be taken in the county to avoid spreading the disease.

Last year, 80 people were infected with the West Nile virus from May 1 to September 29, and eight deaths were reported for this, according to a centralizator published on the National Public Health Institute website.

In 1996, Romania faced the worst West Nile meningitis epidemic in Europe, a disease caused by this virus. Officially, over 300 cases were recorded. The virus is transmitted mainly to birds, but it can also make people sick. For infection to spread to humans, only one sting of a mosquito already infected is sufficient. West Nile virus casualties in Olt

The Ministry of Health informs that 16 cases of meningitis and meningo-encephalitis with West Nile virus were confirmed at national level between May 9 and August 30, 2017, with six deaths reported.

Of the 16 people infected with West Nile virus, six died: three in Bucharest and one in Buzau, Braila, Olt. An 80-year-old man in our county lost his life after being infected with this virus.

In the counties, the situation of West Nile virus infections is as follows: Bucharest -3 cases, Giurgiu, Ilfov and Vrancea 2 cases, and one case in Buzau, Braila, Constanta, Galati, Ialomita, Olt and Sibiu.
