Bird flu outbreak raises concern

The Ministry of Agriculture has temporarily banned the import of eggs and stock chicken from Germany and Czech Republic after an outbreak of a potentially fatal H5N1 strain of bird flu, The Saudi Gazette reports.
The ministry also temporarily banned the import of sheep and goats from Romania.
The decisions follow the weekly bulletin which showed that some cases of bird flu were reported in Bochum state in Germany and Ostrava in the Czech and confirmed the spread of scabby disease in Romania.
With a well-placed contingency plan, Saudi Arabia has continued to maintain high alert level and is ready to meet any emergency. It has imported enough drugs for the treatment of bird flu and its laboratories are prepared to conduct tests on any sample suspected of infection, a ministry official said.
After it was first reported in a farm in Thueringen, the H5N1 virus spread to other poultry in Germany after killing dozens of wild birds, according to German authorities. Tests confirmed the H5N1 in poultry at two farms in the eastern Czech Republic. The virus was found at the farms with 71,000 poultry, bringing the number of outbreaks at Czech farms to four.
More than 30 countries have reported bird flu outbreaks in the past year, mostly in wild birds. :tiphat:
