VietNamNet Bridge ? Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Bui Ba Bong on Tuesday said that the ministry will request the government offer rewards to individuals that declare instances of bird flu.
Southern An Giang Province is the first location to apply bonus policy for those who declare bird flu outbreaks.
?The bonus is not large, but should encourage people to declare outbreaks of the disease so that authorities can contain them,? Mr Bong said.
Thailand recently applied a policy of imposing a $52 fine on any person not declaring infections in their poultry to authorities.
According to the Veterinary Department, Vietnam has not found any new bird flu outbreaks, but the risk of another winter epidemic is high, especially as the disease has broken out in regional countries Thailand, Cambodia and China.. On August 11, bird flu was reported in Prey Veng Province, Cambodia, which is adjacent to Dong Thap in Vietnam.
Meanwhile, poultry farming in Vietnam is being scaled up once more to serve increasing demand toward the years end. Primary problems still exist with the lack of a vaccine for geese, and the country?s inability to stop illegal transport of poultry from China.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on August 22 signed an official dispatch to the chairmen of Peoples' Committees nationwide, urging them to take drastic measures to prevent outbreaks of bird flu and Type A flu in humans.
The dispatch said that veterinarians, healthcare workers, customs, border guards, transport and communications officials, and local steering boards must take action against smuggling and local authorities must keep border areas under control.
These groups must also strictly implement the policy to postpone all imports of poultry and associated products from countries affected by bird flu. They must punish any smugglers of poultry or poultry products, while ensuring and end to corrupt practices among border authorities.
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung will travel to Lang Son this Saturday, August 26, a hot spot for illegal transport of poultry, to personally oversee the adoption of the mandate for prevention of illegal poultry imports.
