Research in the program focuses on areas including: novel carbohydrate modifications and structures associated with inflammation; antibodies that show anti-inflammatory activity in mouse models of colitis; antimicrobial properties of certain carbohydrate structures; synthesis of artificial chemokines with therapeutic potential for a variety of inflammatory and infectious diseases; inflammation in the nervous system, particularly in the context of stroke; the contribution of microglia and macrophages to neurodegenerative disorders and in HIV-associated dementia; microbial pathogen use of the innate immunity pathway as a mechanism to prevent host inflammation; development of small molecule inhibitors for phosphatases involved in inflammatory and infectious disease; biochemistry and cell biology of tumor necrosis factor family receptors and NACHT-family proteins involved in host defense and inflammation; and inflammatory stem cells.
