Coronavirus Ireland: Mater Hospital investigated for bulk reporting of COVID-19 cases

May 15, 2020

Health Minister Simon Harris is expecting to get a full report today from the HSE

The Mater Hospital is the hospital being investigated for a late bulk reporting of their case numbers of Covid-19 to the Health Production Surveillance Centre.

The Dublin hospital bulk reported 244 cases yesterday after new daily figures for the hospital were not included in the daily Covid-19 updates for weeks, according to reports.

The hospital today released a statement saying they reported their cases daily as they are legally obliged to, and are working with the HSE to figure out what went wrong.

They said: "The Mater Hospital has reported all cases of Covid-19 positive results to the relevant authorities on a daily basis.

"At all times the Mater Hospital provided the information that the HSE required and met all legal requirements to report infectious diseases. All of this information is correct and up to date.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan agreed that the 426 cases looked like a significant increase on recent trends.

But he said a large number of the cases were from one hospital which were recorded over a period of time understood to be several weeks and were only reported in one group yesterday.

Dr Holohan said: "There has been a reporting of one large number of cases that accumulated over a period of time diagnosed in respect of one specific hospital and reported by the occupational health department of that hospital."

Dr Holohan said the cases involved go back to the middle of March.

"They were accumulated, we weren't aware of them, and they were reported in one group today to add to the number we would have diagnosed over the course of the day," he added.
