Another 17 patients who tested positive for coronavirus have died in Ireland, bringing the death toll to 71.
In the last 24 hours the Republic saw its biggest daily jump since the start of the outbreak. Another 325 new cases of coronavirus have also been confirmed, with the total standing at 3,235.

Another 14 patients diagnosed with Covid-19 have died, the National Public Health Emergency Team reported on Wednesday evening, with 212 new cases recorded.

Ten of those who died were located in the east and four were in the south. The deceased patients were seven women and seven men. Of the 14, eight were reported as having underlying health conditions.

There have now been 85 Covid-19-related deaths in Ireland. The median age of those who died was 82.

Meanwhile, the Health Protection Survelliance Centre has been informed of 212 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland, as of 1pm on Wednesday.

This brings the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 here to 3,447.

The Department of Health has confirmed there have been 13 more deaths linked to the coronavirus, bringing to 98 the number of people who have died in Ireland.

The latest figures also indicate there are now 3,849 confirmed cases of the virus in Ireland following the reporting of 402 new cases.

Of the 13 people who have died, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre has been informed that ten of them were reported as having underlying health conditions.

...As of Friday there have been 4753 confirmed cases in Ireland - 3,849 in the south and 904 in the north.

A hundred and forty-six people have now died from the illness in Ireland - 98 in the south and 48 in the north.

These totals for the country as a whole are expected to rise when the Health Protection Surveillance Centre in the south releases its daily data this evening...

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has today been informed that 16 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in Ireland have died:

11 deaths located in the east, 4 in the north west, 1 in the west of the country
the patients included 6 females and 10 males
4 patients were reported as having underlying health conditions
the median age of today’s reported deaths is 78
There have now been 174 COVID-19 related deaths in Ireland. The median age of deaths in Ireland is 81.

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has been informed of 370 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland, as at 1pm, Monday 6 April.

There are now 5,364 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland.

Ireland's prime minister to work as doctor during coronavirus epidemic

Sean Gallup/Getty Images(DUBLIN) — Ireland’s prime minister Leo Varadkar will be returning to medical practice to work as a doctor for one session a week to help out during the coronavirus epidemic, his office has said.

Varadkar, a former doctor, has re-joined Ireland’s medical registry and offered his services to Ireland’s Health Service Executive, a spokesman for the office of the prime minister, called the Taoiseach, confirmed to ABC News on Monday.

Varadkar studied medicine and worked as a junior doctor in Dublin hospitals for several years, before qualifying as a general practitioner in 2010. He left medicine to become a full-time politician and had his name removed from the medical registry in 2013.

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus has soared over 6,000 while a further 25 people have sadly died from the deadly disease.

The Department of Health this evening announced a further 365 cases of COVID-19, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 6,074 as of 1pm this afternoon.

The death toll from the killer virus now stands at 235.

Of the 25 new confirmed deaths, 15 were male and 10 were female.

Coronavirus: Another 25 deaths announced in the Republic

Good Friday fatalaties bring Covid-19 toll to 288 – with average age of today’s deaths 85

The deaths of another 25 patients – 14 males and 11 females – diagnosed with Covid-19 have been reported on Friday by the National Public Health Emergency Team.

Some 23 of the deaths were in the east and two were in the west. Some 16 of the patients were reported as having underlying health conditions. There have now been 288 Covid-19 related deaths in the Republic. The median age of today’s deaths is 85.

The National Public Health Emergency Team also reported 480 new confirmed cases on Friday. The total number of confirmed cases now stands at 7,054.

Of the 251 patients admitted to intensive care, 157 remain there while 62 have been discharged and 31 have died. Some 203 of these patients had an underlying condition. The median age of patients in intensive care is 61.

There have been 135 clusters of Covid-19 in nursing homes and in affected homes, one in five staff, and one in six residents, have tested positive, he said.

There have been 33 more deaths from coronavirus here, the Department of Health has confirmed. The death toll now stands at 320 people.

The total number of Covid-19 cases in the Republic of Ireland has risen to 8,928.

The Department also confirmed that 553 new cases of coronavirus have been identified.

In addition, a further 286 older cases of Covid-19 have been reported by a laboratory in Germany.

Meanwhile, 15 more people have lost their lives to coronavirus in Northern Ireland. This is the biggest single rise in one day there and the death toll now stands at 107.

BRIAN LAWLESS/PA The head of the state’s virus laboratory has apologised to people who were incorrectly told that they had tested negative for Covid-19 but insisted that it would not be an issue going forward.

The apology came as the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) yesterday confirmed 832 new cases of the virus, along with 41 additional deaths. Of the new cases, 548 were reported by Irish labs while 284 were confirmed by German labs hired by the HSE to work through a backlog of tests.

In total there have been 11,479 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Ireland since the outbreak began, along with a death toll of 406.

There have now been 486 Covid-19 related deaths in the Republic. The median age of today’s deaths is 84.

On Thursday, NPHET also reported 629 new confirmed cases processed by Irish labs, and 95 processed in a German lab. The total number of confirmed cases now stands at 13,271.

Of the cases occurring up to Tuesday, 55 per cent are in women and 45 per cent in men. The median age of confirmed cases is 48 years, and 2,026 of the 12,425 cases were hospitalised.

Of those hospitalised, 284 were admitted to ICU.
