Training manual helps journalists report on avian flu

UNICEF and Internews Network, with support from the Government of Japan, have produced a manual on how to conduct training courses on avian influenza reporting. The 68-page manual provides a methodology for trainers and media support organizations, as well as a sample three-day training course agenda, complete with suggested lectures, discussion topics, exercises, suggested reading, field trip planning, and field safety guidelines for journalists covering avian flu.
The manual uses basic sources on avian influenza, including information from World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), scientific journals and academic research. It also provides links to resources for trainers designing their own courses.
The manual is a product of Internews Network’s seminar program on Equipping Journalists for Accurate Reporting on Avian Influenza and the H5N1 Virus in Southeast Asia.
