Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 11/28 - FT Total - 2,449

The U.S. total for this week is an undercount due to the Thanksgiving holiday; therefore, I don't know if there really was a decrease in deaths reported per day. Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Maryland, Montana, NYC, South Dakota, and Texas didn't report deaths for Week 46. Michigan, Oregon, and Pennsylvania were providing daily updates and last updated on Wednesday. At the end of next week we'll have to add deaths reported over two weeks together and divide by 14 to get a more accurate daily rate. Flu activity has been decreasing in most regions, but given that deaths lag illnesses, the elevated numbers of deaths reported could go into December.

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 12/5 - FT Total - 2,631

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 12/5 - FT Total - 2,631

Although the number of deaths per day slightly increased, quite a few deaths reported this week were from Week 46 and were not reported last week due to the holiday. So, the number for Week 46 was probably higher and the number for Week 47 was likely lower, which is means that he number of deaths have decreased two weeks in a row. Coupled with the dramatic drop in %ILI, this is great news. This fall wave could have been so much worse.

My hope and prayer is that before the next wave begins, the number of people with immunity - either from having had H1N1, or having been vaccinated - will reduce the length and severity of the next wave.

I still have some serious concerns about California, which seems to have experienced a long, steady death rate, starting in the summer. There has not been the same decrease in deaths in California as the rest of the U.S. In fact, California represents ~12% of the U.S. population, but has ~18% of the deaths.

Due to the back-to-back Friday holidays, a number of states only have data current through Week 50 (week ending 12/19). As a result, the number of deaths reported over the next week might include quite a few that occurred over the past two weeks.

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 2/5 - FT Total - 3,229

The number of H1N1 deaths reported went down significantly this week. However, others report an increase in P&I deaths, so it's hard to tell how accurate my numbers are at this point.

I have high hopes that we've seen the last of this, but public interest and media reporting seem to be at an all-time low. Some state health department sites aren't updating weekly anymore and some haven't updated their sites in over a month.

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 1/14/11 Total - 3,522

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 1/14/11 Total - 3,522

There have been 44 influenza deaths in the U.S. this season, most occurring in the past month. I'll start posting totals by state if the numbers start to grow significantly, but we do need to keep an eye on PA, SC, and NY in the short term.

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 1/14/11 Total - 3,522

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 1/14/11 Total - 3,522

Pennsylvania did not report this week. The number of hospitalizations tripled from Week 52 to Week 1, so there might be additional fatalities from Week 2. Other than PA, there were 23 deaths last week.

The total fatalities to date in the U.S. are as follows:

Total Deaths - 2009/10 - 2010/11

3,547 - 3,480 - 67

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 2/4/11 Total - 3,577 and Season - 125

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 2/4/11 Total - 3,577 and Season - 125

I found a few more sources that gave totals for last season and I had to adjust the numbers, so the 2009/10 totals might not match up with the last report. That is also why the total tally only increased by 30, while the total for 2010/11 increased by 58. I had counted the early 2010/11 season deaths in the total for each state several months ago before I broke it out by season. So, I essentially moved 28 from 2009/10 to 2010/11. Sorry for any confusion.

Most states are no longer reporting adult influenza deaths, so many of these are from media reports.

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 2/14/11 total - 3,602 - season - 174

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 2/14/11 total - 3,602 - season - 174

I'll post the state by state details every two weeks or so unless there is a significant increase in fatalities. I stumbled upon information indicating that there were more deaths in Arkansas in 2009-10 that I had recorded, so the total number of 3,602 (Since April 2009) has increased more than the season total (174).

In the 2009-10 season we were primarily counting only pH1N1 fatalities; however, that became the only strain circulating in most areas. This season we are counting all influenza deaths. On the other hand, most states were reporting adult influenza deaths last season, but only a few are officially reporting this season. As a result, the apparent percentage of pediatric deaths is much higher; however, that is only due to under-reporting of adult deaths.

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 3/6/11 total - 3,933 - season - 331

Re: U.S. Fatalities - Updated 3/6/11 total - 3,933 - season - 331

I posted the incorrect total number last time. There were 3,602 deaths from April 2009 through August 2010. So, the total deaths through 2/14/11 should have been 3,776 (3,602 + 174). I'll post the state-by-state numbers in a couple of weeks. The numbers this season are not very reliable since some states are only reporting pediatric deaths and others (like CA) are making it optional for the counties to report adult deaths. So, we're getting good data from some CA county websites and nothing from others. The same goes for the states, some of which are only reporting pediatric deaths to the CDC and not posting the information on their websites.

Re: Reported U.S. Fatalities - Updated 3/21/11 total - 4,031 - season - 429

Here is a comprehensive update of reported U.S. influenza deaths since April 2009. Keep in mind that the majority of states are only reporting pediatric deaths and deaths of pregnant and post-partum women this season. Some states, such as California, are not reporting any deaths on their website, so I have relied on some of the county health dept. sites and CDC reports of pediatric deaths.
