Two rabid cat-biting incidents in the western sections of South Daytona and Port Orange prompted the Volusia County Health Department to put out a 60-day rabies alert starting today.
The alert warns about the dangers of feeding feral cats and other wildlife, and cautions against leaving food outside at night.
It's the second rabies alert the Health Department has issued this year. The first was sparked in February by several rabid raccoon attacks in the Ponce Inlet area. In the latest incidents, though, only cats were involved.
The first occurred March 9 and involved a cat that wandered into the road and was hit by a car. Trying to help the cat, the driver of the car was bitten and so was the passenger, said Paul Minshew, manager of the Volusia County Health Department's Environmental Health division.
Another encounter with a rabid cat occurred April 12 in what health officials call a "furious" cat attack, when an advanced case of rabies prompts the animal to attack, unprovoked. In this case, a cat ran into a house through an open door and attacked the human inside.
