Red Bluff mother presses for early meningitis warning

Braden Schoelen didn't feel good when he woke up early on Jan. 8.
By the time the 10-year-old Red Bluff fifth-grader would normally have been settling in for bed that night, his mother, Suzanne Schoelen, was watching in helpless horror as emergency room doctors futilely tried to bring him back to life.
A bacterial meningitis infection had stopped his heart.
In that moment, the term "meningitis" became more than just another vague medical condition for Schoelen.
She's since become an expert on such outbreaks and how public health departments release information when they suspect someone has fallen ill. What she's learned has left her outraged...
