Rats swarm New Orleans' streets as coronavirus precautions leave them empty

Precautions put in place to slow the rise of coronavirus cases in New Orleans has inadvertently led to a rat problem for the Louisiana city. With restaurants closed save for take-out service, far less food waste is being discarded in the city's alleyways, driving the local rodent population out into the open to search for scraps.

New Orleans' famous Mardi Gras celebration brought thousands of tourists to the city, and medical experts believe it might be a big factor in the city's COVID-19 outbreak. Now with Bourbon Street's famous bars all closed and people social distancing, videos show dozens of rats scurrying through the empty streets...
 
Has anyone proven that rats cannot contract and carry this disease? So far we know dogs can become infected, but I am yet to see confirmation that they do not become carriers. I saw a study that shows hamsters can contract sars-cov2, but they generate antibodies, so they are not carriers. Also, I haven't see a study about cats at all, but it seems they cannot contract the disease.

Not looking to declare war on any wild animal populations, but we do need to know if any have the potential to be long term reservoirs so we can develop vaccines for them too.
 
There is no consensus scientifically that dogs can be infected. I see questioning in the scientific community about the accuracy of tests in China of humans regarding recovered patients testing negative, then testing positive a couple of weeks later. Read up on the XMRV saga and how easy it is to have laboratory contamination in labs. It takes many independently repeated studies to get scientific consensus.
