THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Four deaths have been reported owing to Diphtheria, three owing to Dengue Fever and 112 following Weil?s disease (rat fever) in the State this year, Health Minister P.K.Sreemathi informed the Assembly on Thursday.
Out of the four Diphtheria deaths, two were reported in Malappuram and one each in Thrissur and Thiruvananthapuram. More cases were reported from Malappuram and the situation has been brought under control.
Several medical camps have been organised in the worst-hit areas to increase awareness on preventive vaccination. The DPT vaccines have been made available in all these camps, said the Minister in a reply to A.P.Anil Kumar of the Congress.
552 cases of Dengue, 1,209 cases of rat fever, 492 cases of Chikungunya and 24,675 cases of suspected Chikungunya were reported in the State during this year, she said. More cases of rat fever were reported in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha and Idukki. Steps have been taken to supply drugs to all health centres in these districts. The National Rural Health Mission (Arogya Keralam) has distributed Rs 10,000 each to all panchayat wards for carrying out sanitation activities. For this, Health Sanitation Committees have been constituted in the ward-level, the Health Minister said.
