CS to review health scenario, swine flu toll at 77

JAIPUR. Swine flu is expected to be the focus of the health department review by chief secretary on Thursday. The disease continues to spread in the state and despite the department's efforts. Two more swine flu deaths were reported on Wednesday. The toll since April has reached 77.

Chief secretary S Ahmed had reviewed the seasonal diseases scenario at the beginning of September and had instructed officials to strengthen the drive against such dieases. The state government had assured additional funds to upgrade laboratories and better facilities at the health centres. The release and utilisation of these funds will be discussed at the meeting. Unavailability of staff and non-operational first referral units will also figure in the review.

"Swine flu is better controlled than in the initial weeks of September. The department has been taking the issue seriously and the report will be submitted to the chief secretary," a senior official at the health directorate said.

This season swine flu has registered high incidence and 1,185 people so far have been tested positive. The high mortality, especially among pregnant women, has been a major cause of concern. Nearly 15 pregnant women reportedly died since April. The health department has asked fficials to deal all cases of cold and influenza in pregnant women, young children and elderly people with caution.

The disease has continued to spread in the state and 41 new cases were tested positive on Wednesday. Among these 32 patients were recorded in Jaipur, three from Jodhpur, two from Kota while one patient was recorded each from Barmer, Bharatpur, Ajmer and Jhunjhunu district.

Flu fatalities in Rajasthan. The current wave of activity does not have a corresponding peak in 2009. An even larger winter wave this December is certainly possible.
