JAIPUR. In a bid to deal with the swine flu menace, the state government has increased the paramedical staff by creating 375 new posts.

The decision was informed by the new chief secretary S Ahmed during a review meeting on the swine flu scenario on Saturday.

Swine flu toll continued to rise, with two more deaths being reported in the state. Another 39 H1N1 cases have been detected during the day.

Ensuring that fund crunch will not be an obstacle for the swine flu prevention activity, Ahmed said National Rural Health Mission has provided Rs 4 crore, while Rs 55 lakh have been allocated from the disaster management fund.

Despite the department's claims of swine flu-preparedness, the number of cases being reported this year are much higher than the previous year. Against two deaths, and 82 positive cases reported till end of September 2009, this year in September alone, swine flu has claimed nine lives, even as 133 cases have been detected in state.

Since April this year, the state has reported 387 positive cases and 25 swine flu deaths.

Health officials however attribute the rising numbers of H1N1 patients to the expansion of testing facilities across the state. "Unlike many states that are yet to have a single swine flu testing facility, the SMS Medical College laboratory was upgraded last year. Now, we have 11 government and private testing centres," said Dr OP Gupta, director, public health.

The officials however, admitted that the disease has spread to most of the areas in the state. "The disease is now spreading on a community level. It can no longer be contained by just screening those arriving from outside," said Gupta.

The department assured that it has enough staff and medicines to deal with the flu menace. The government hospitals are providing free treatment for swine flu.
