The quiet infection of poultries

Good evening,
We are asking ourselves some questions on the other side of the Atlantic about the consequences of vaccinations on the poultries.

A very good article found by Ryback

The Minister for Health, Chow Yat-ngok held up the spectrum of "the quiet infection of poultries", whereas an aviary case of influenza was detected just on the other side of the border between SAR Hong-Kong and China, with Shenzhen.

As we indicated it to you in an article yesterday. A last report/ratio of the Chinese official Agency Xinhua, indicates that the man reached with Shenzhen is in a critical state, but that nobody in his family has for the moment developed similar symptoms. They are in observation.

Mr. Chow, indicated this Wednesday, that the victim, called Jiang, had not had a specific contact with chickens, contrary to what had been indicated, but that it had consumed a chicken brought back from the market of Longgang by his wife. "the risk of infection was not more important than for any citizen of Shenzhen..." T-it indicated.

"We start to think that there is a strong possibility that" a quiet "infection among the poultries is currently in hand in China. Perhaps it transports the virus without showing the symptoms of them. It is what worries us largely... ".

A representative of the town of Shenzhen, indicated that three initial tests carried out on Jiang by a local laboratory, appeared positive with the H5N1.

Tests of confirmation in Beijing are currently awaited.

The World Health Organization (WHO) indicated this Wednesday that these tests have great chances to be confirmed.

The authorities of Hong-Kong detect from now on the travellers systematically coming from Shenzhen by the grounds, in particular via the systematic taking of temperature, and from the medical inspections for the imported poultries of China will be installation.

Mr. Chow indicated that if suspicions are real, this news gives will pose serious problems. "If the human ones come into contact with these quiet carriers, they will be possibly contaminated without we not knowing the origin of this contamination...".

Medical experts indicated that the vaccines injected into the animals could possibly prevent them from falling sick, or to die, but lets the virus develop in them. This problem was already observed in Indonesia, where the H5N1 already killed at least 37 people.

Feng Shaomin, spokesman of the Ministry for the Health of Guangdong, indicated that the authorities had set up the inspection of the poultries entering on its territory.

In Hong-Kong, the hospital authorities increased their program of monitoring whereby the hospitals must bring back all the patients suffering from pneumonia.

At the same time, a team of six members including/understanding of the doctors, the veterinary surgeon and official of the safety food of Hong-Kong, visited Shenzhen this Wednesday and met the authorities in order to discuss this case. After the meeting, the spokesman of the Department of the Health of Hong-Kong indicated that since Jiang was in a critical state at the hospital, it could not provide any more information on his contamination, if as well is as it knows it itself.

In Beijing, the authorities try to calm the fears of the citizens. "It is an individual case and there are no signs of massive contamination in Shenzhen... We ask the citizens to remain calm... "indicated Mao Qunan, the spokesman of the Ministry for Chinese Health.

WHO indicated for its part to follow very close the information provided by Hong-Kong and Beijing, but that China did not have for the moment required assistance.

The H5N1 appeared for the first time in Hong-Kong in 1997 when it had killed six people. Had two million poultries then been cut down?

Thank you Bertrand for this source. source: http://taipeisoir.iw2c.com/ARCHIVES/... _frontiere.php

Note ryback: The communication seems to be reliable.

The information transmitted to the press is relatively worrying. The installation of control of the systematic temperatures of the people is a first (It seems to to me that it is the first time that I read that a country set up this measurement).

Situation out of control?

It appears that all of South East Asia has ignited, again.

This time, however, I fear that there will be many more human infections than previously. As expected, this will increase the chance that a pandemic strain will emerge.

Hong-Kong fearfull of the H5N1 case at its frontier
Original title of the article dated June 15th 2006

Effectively, it is possible that vaccinated poultry had become silent carriers of the virus...

Did China vaccinated widly its poultry in this frontier region ??

From Manual of Diagnostic Tests
and Vaccines for Terrestrial Animals
of the OIE.

C. REQUIREMENTS FOR VACCINES AND DIAGNOSTIC BIOLOGICALS

Experimental work has shown, for both NAI and LPAI that vaccination protects against clinical signs and mortality, reduces virus shedding and increases resistance to infection, protects from diverse field viruses within the same hemagglutinin subtype, protects from low and high challenge exposure, and reduces contact transmission of challenge virus (12, 16, 44, 50). However, the virus is still able to infect and replicate in clinically healthy vaccinated birds. In some countries, vaccines designed to contain or prevent NAI are specifically banned or discouraged by government agencies because it has been considered that they may interfere with stamping-out control policies. However, most AI control regulations reserve the right to use vaccines in emergencies.

It is important that vaccination alone is not considered the solution to the control of NAI or LPAI subtypes if eradication is the desired result. Without the application of monitoring systems, strict biosecurity and depopulation in the face of infection, there is the possibility that these viruses could become endemic in vaccinated poultry populations. Long-term circulation of the virus in a vaccinated population may result in both antigenic and genetic changes in the virus and this has been reported to have occurred in Mexico (26 ).

OIE is what I call a reliable source !

From the same document wich is archived there

Since the 1970s in the USA , there has been some use of inactivated vaccines produced under special licence on a commercial basis (21, 29, 34). These vaccines have been used primarily in turkeys against viruses that are not highly pathogenic, but which may cause serious problems, especially in exacerbating circumstances. Significant quantities of vaccine have been used (22, 29). Conventional vaccination against the prevailing strain of LPAI has also been used in Italy for a number of years (15). Vaccination against H9N2 infections has been used in Pakistan (32), Iran (54) and the People's Republic of China (27).

Inactivated vaccine was prepared from the LPNAI virus of H7N3 subtype responsible for a series of outbreaks in turkeys in Utah in 1995 and used, with other measures, to bring the outbreaks under control (22). Similarly in Connecticut in 2003 vaccination of recovered hens and replacement pullets with a H7N2 or H7N3 vaccine was implemented following an outbreak of LPNAI caused by a H7N2 virus (46).

Vaccination against HPNAI of H5N2 subtype was used in Mexico following outbreaks in 1994–1995, and against H7N3 subtype in Pakistan (19, 26, 31) following outbreaks in 1995. In Mexico, the HPNAI virus appears to have been eradicated, but LPNAI virus of H5N2 has continued to circulate, while in Pakistan highly pathogenic AI viruses genetically close to the original highly pathogenic AI virus were still being isolated in 2001 ( 51) and 2004. Following the outbreaks of HPNAI caused by H5N1 virus in Hong Kong in 2002 (39) a vaccination policy was adopted there using an H5N2 vaccine. In 2004 the widespread outbreaks of highly pathogenic AI H5N1 in some countries of South-East Asia resulted in prophylactic vaccination being used in the People's Republic of China and Indonesia . Prophylactic vaccination has also been used in limited areas in Italy to aid the control of H5 and H7 LPNAI viruses.
