Three swine flu deaths - more predicted

8:44a.m. 4th August 2009

Three more Queenslanders with swine flu have died over the past three days, bringing the state's death toll to 12, a Queensland Health spokeswoman said yesterday.

A woman in her 50s died in Townsville Hospital and a man in his 20s died in Gold Coast Hospital on Saturday.

A man in his 30s died at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital yesterday.

The latest victims, who had tested positive for human swine influenza, were in a group vulnerable to the virus, the spokeswoman said.

Meanwhile, a critically-ill patient suffering from swine flu was flown 700km by helicopter because it was the best option available, officials say.

The incident came as health authorities warned of a possible second wave of the virus after a peak later this month.

The patient was flown from Atherton east to Cairns, when no beds were available in intensive care.

The 48-year-old man was then flown south to Townsville for transfer to another helicopter and flown further south to Mackay, where beds were available at the Mackay Base Hospital.

Queensland has recorded its 13th human swine flu-related death.

A man in his 30s, who was in a vulnerable group, died on Monday in a undisclosed north Queensland hospital.

In Queensland, 99 people confirmed as having human swine flu are currently hospitalised, including 32 in intensive care.

Queensland Health says there are also another 20 probable but unconfirmed human swine flu cases in intensive care.

The man's death follows three other human swine flu-related deaths that have occurred since Saturday.
