Influenza in Queensland 2009
Key Points from the report:
Laboratory confirmed influenza (total)
- Year to date,12087 cases of have been notified to the Queensland Health Notifiable Conditions Register (NOCS) (see Table 1 & Figure 1)
- The peak age-group for both Swine flu and non-Swine flu is 10-19 years (Figure 2
Laboratory testing profile (Pathology Queensland)
- Test requests have continued to rise despite the change to testing policy.
- During weeks 28 to 30, 30% ? 50% of Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 tests have been positive (Figure 3)
- The ratio of Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 to all other influenza positive results has ranged from 3.5 to 5.0 during weeks 28 to 30 (Figure 4)
Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 notifications
- The percentage of weekly notifications attributable to Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 has been sharply rising in recent weeks reaching 85% in week 28 (Figure 5). Further data will be required to determine whether the rising trend is sustained
- Notifications of influenza A by subtype and strain are summarised in Table 2.
- The peak age group was 10 ? 19 years for both indigenous (31.9%) and non?indigenous (37.6%) cases. See Table 3 and Figure 6 for further detail
Hospitalisations related to Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 in Queensland
- Figure 7 summarises hospital admission data by date of admission
- Figure 8 provides a profile of hospital bed occupancy by date.
- NB the surveillance systems from which data are obtained are still evolving. Very recent data may not be accurate
The Australian Sentinel Practices Research Network (ASPREN)
- A small number of Queensland GPs contribute data on consultations related to Influenza Like Illness (ILI) to this national system which is co-ordinated by Discipline 4 of 14 of General Practice at the University of Adelaide and The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
- Table 4 and Figure 9 summarise YTD ILI presentations by 1000 consultations. A steadily rising trend is apparent from week 20.
Flu Tracking
- FluTracking is a pilot online health surveillance system to detect epidemics of influenza which is a joint initiative of The University of Newcastle, Hunter New England (NSW Health) and Hunter Medical Research Institute.
- Participation is voluntary and involves the completion of a weekly online survey during the influenza season.
- Data are collected on basic demographics, symptoms of ILI and absenteeism.
- Figure 10 summarises data to week 29 for Queensland Participants
