Disease fears grow as flooding hits towns' water supplies and rivers rise in Queensland
RECORD flood levels in Queensland towns will take weeks to recede, sparking fears the disaster could lead to a disease outbreak with hundreds of homes inundated with contaminated water.

Dozens of communities remain isolated with flooding at unprecedented levels in Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Emerald and a string of smaller towns as more than 1000 people were forced out of their homes, The Courier-Mail reported.

Emergency alerts were issued to residents in flood-affected towns to boil drinking water.

Up to 500 homes are at risk of flooding in Rockhampton, where the mayor fears a repeat of the devastating 1991 floods.

And Bundaberg residents were out in force this morning to see the raging Burnett River which peaked at 7.9m overnight...

200,000 People Affected by Flooding in Australia
Published December 30, 2010

BRISBANE, Australia ? More than 200,000 people have been affected by relentless flooding in northeast Australia, with the flood zone now stretching over an area bigger than France and Germany combined, officials said Friday.

Thousands of homes and businesses across Queensland state have been inundated with water after days of pounding rain caused swollen rivers to overflow. The entire population of two towns was forced to evacuate as water swamped their communities, cutting off roads and devastating crops...

Australian floods likely to last weeks, warns Queensland premier

Military helicopters supply food and medicine to city of Rockhampton after floods hit Queensland killing three people

guardian.co.uk, Monday 3 January 2011 17.02 GMT

The last road into the Australian city of Rockhampton was tonight cut off by rising water as Queensland's premier, Anna Bligh, warned that the floods which have overwhelmed the state may not recede for weeks.

"It looks like Rockhampton's in the middle of an inland sea. The amount of water coming down these river systems is nothing short of astonishing," said Bligh on a visit to the city.

"Given the scale and size of this disaster, and the prospect that we will see water sitting potentially for a couple of weeks, we will have major issues to deal with throughout January," she said.

Rockhampton, which has 75,000 people, will be supplied by military helicopters and by barge. Fourteen tonnes of food and medical supplies were taken in on Mondaytoday by road before the highway was cut off.

The flooding has hit an area the size of France and Germany, affecting 200,000 people in more than 20 towns and cities.

Over 90 missing in Australia as floods inundate Brisbane

By Ed Davies
BRISBANE, Australia | Tue Jan 11, 2011 9:42pm EST

BRISBANE, Australia (Reuters) - Thousands of residents of Australia's third-largest city evacuated homes on Wednesday as massive floods began to inundate the financial district, sparked panic buying of food and left authorities despairing for more than 90 people missing.

The biggest floods in a century have so far killed 14 people since starting their march across the northern mining state of Queensland last month, crippling the coking coal industry, destroying infrastructure, putting a brake on the economy and sending the local currency to four-week lows.

With a flood surge expected to peak in the state capital of Brisbane, a city of two million, on Thursday, residents pushed shopping carts laden with food through flooded streets as supermarkets ran out of staples such as milk and bread.

Teen gives life to save brother

Lacey Burley | 12th January 2011

TOOWOOMBA boy Jordan Rice, 13, has been remembered as a hero after he let his younger brother be rescued first, seconds before he and his mother Donna were swept to their deaths in the CBD.

The death toll from the devastating floods which swept through Toowoomba and the region on Monday afternoon has risen to 10, with grave fears held for another 18.

Murphys Creek couple Steve and Sandra Matthews were killed when they were washed from their home.

Donna Rice's partner of 28 years, John Tyson, yesterday told The Chronicle how his beloved partner and their son perished.

Flood-ravaged Brisbane braces for the worst

Updated 2 hours 59 minutes ago

Brisbane's flood disaster is about to take a turn for the worse as the south-east Queensland city faces a flood peak to rival the 1974 crisis.

After a day of eerily calm weather, which saw waters slip into backyards and businesses across Brisbane, residents are being told to prepare for a "shocking and remarkable challenge".

Already thousands of homes in some Brisbane suburbs have waters past the second-storey after Wednesday's peak reached 4.2 metres.

The normally sedate Brisbane River, swollen by months of rain, has become a raging torrent, tearing pontoons and boats loose and bursting its banks to swamp low-lying parts of the city.

Australia floods inundate Brisbane, 43 missing

By Ed Davies

BRISBANE, Australia | Wed Jan 12, 2011 5:35pm GMT

BRISBANE, Australia (Reuters) - - Massive floods shut down the centre of Australia's third-largest city, sent thousands fleeing from their homes and sparked panic buying of food on Wednesday as rescuers searched for 43 people missing in floodwaters.

Australia's biggest floods in a century have so far killed 16 people since starting their onslaught across northern mining state Queensland last month, crippling the coking coal industry, destroying infrastructure, putting a brake on the economy and sending the local currency to four-week lows.

Re: Queensland, AU: 16 people killed and over 43 missing as floods inundate Brisbane

Police have released a list of 18 confirmed dead and 14 missing in Queensland's flood disaster, giving details of how they died or when some were last seen.

State Premier Anna Bligh yesterday confirmed a further death that took the official toll to 18, after the body of a woman and later a middle-aged man was recovered in the Lockyer Valley.

Record floods were predicted in several rural Australian communities today as rivers swollen from upstream rain flowed heavily into southern states.

The focus of today's concerns however has switched to Victoria in southern Australia where officials expected floodwaters to drown out highways and isolate dozens of towns in northeastern parts of the state.

The town of Horsham could face a major flood during today's expected peak of the Wimmera River. Up to 500 properties in the town of about 14,000 people could be affected.

With a massive search still under way in the Lockyer Valley, the families of those missing agreed to release the names and photographs of their loved ones in an attempt to help find them.

They include Regina Vanderwerf, 82 - who was last seen inside a Grantham house but was unable to reach other family members who escaped the deluge - and Dawn Margaret Radke, 56, who went missing along with her toddler granddaughter Jessica Keep, when a torrent of water smashed through a brick wall of their Grantham home and carried them away. Another family member sheltering in the house, Pauline Magner, 65, was yesterday confirmed dead, but four others survived.

Police have dealt with 200 missing persons reports since floodwater rushed down from Toowoomba and through the Lockyer Valley on Monday, but that number has been revised down to 14, with grave fears held for all of them.

All of those missing and many of the dead are from the valley, which bore the brunt of the flooding, described by some survivors as like an "inland tsunami".

Six of those known to have died came from Grantham, with the search now focused downstream of the town, 100 kilometres west of Brisbane.

The only victim police had previously identified was Donna Rice, 43, who died along with her son Jordan, 13, after being trapped inside their car in the Toowoomba CBD on Monday.

Police yesterday named six more victims known to be dead including mother Llync-Chiann Clarke, 31.

Ms Clarke, her 12-year-old son Garry Maguire and five-year-old daughter Jocelyn Maguire perished when they became trapped inside a rural fire brigade truck that was flooded while on Gatton-Heildon Road, in Gatton.

Other victims named yesterday were: Robert John Kelly, 30, whose body was found on Wednesday in a grey Toyota LandCruiser that was upside down in Myall Creek, Dalby; Van Toan Giang, 24, who disappeared under water while trying to check his family's property in Durack; Jean Gurr, 88, who was trapped inside her home when the wall of water hit and was later found dead inside; and Selwyn Schefe, 52, whose body was found after he was swept away from the tray of a ute as his house collapsed. Mr Schefe's daughter Katie, 6, is still missing, but his wife, Catherine, 50, survived after grabbing hold of a tree.

Three of the official dead are yet to be formally identified, including a man and a woman who were found in separate locations in Grantham. Police are also investigating two reports of women swept away in Toowoomba and Grantham.
