Outbreak of flu and gastroenteritis in Laval

(TLN) Just as has been happening in the rest of Quebec, for the past week medical officials in Laval have been recording an elevated number of flu cases, along with an outbreak of gastroenteritis caused by a virus. As such, Laval residents are being asked to use certain preventive measures in order to minimize the spread.
Flu watch for next few weeks
The flu situation needs to be watched even if flu season usually only lasts a few weeks, says Dr. Nicole Damestoy, director of public health for Laval. ?The washing of hands and vaccination and the best means of protection to protect against transmission,? she says.
Flu manifests itself with a sudden fever, muscle aches, fatigue and often a cough. It is contagious and lasts about 5 to 7 days. It can also trigger complications, especially in the elderly, or persons with chronic health problems. In either case, it is suggested you call the Info-Sant? medical information line by dialing 811.
