MONTREAL - Montreal's two pediatric hospital emergency rooms are swamped with children and their parents. Many children are showing up with the cold and flu, which is typical for this time of the year. But there are also a fair number of children with foreign objects stuck up their noses or in their mouths and throats, the result of being given "age-inappropriate toys," hospital officials said.​

At the Montreal Children's Hospital, more than 35 per cent of the children were presenting with seasonal fever and viral symptoms...​

MONTREAL ? Montreal's two children's hospitals are struggling to deal with the fallout of the winter flu, while much of a Laval hospital remained closed to visitors Thursday because of a gastro bug.

Emergency rooms at the Montreal Children's and the Sainte-Justine Hospital were crowded with cases of the seasonal flu. A spokesperson for the Montreal Children's said Thursday they are seeing about 30 cases a day, about double the normal amount.

Right now the hospital is struggling to handle 300 patients a daily -- far above its capacity of 180.

Meanwhile, much of Cite de la Sante Hospital in Laval remained closed to visitors Thursday because of a gastro outbreak.

Andreanne Constantinou of Cite de la Sante said staff members are wearing gloves, protective shirts, masks, and washing their hands. Ambulances have been told to avoid the hospital if possible, she said.

Hospital emergency rooms in the Montreal area are overcrowded and some patients have been waiting more than two days to see a doctor.

The Montreal public health department said some ERs were operating at an average of 165 per cent on Wednesday, a jump of 15 per cent over Tuesday's average...

(CBC)Provincial health officials in Quebec said Thursday that measures being taken to fight emergency room overcrowding are proving effective.

Many emergency rooms have been overrun of late because of early flu and gastroenteritis outbreaks and staff reductions during the holidays.

Officials said resources are being deployed and health agencies are working directly with hospitals. As a result, overcrowding at many hospitals has begun to subside...
