As Quebec’s measles outbreak spreads, the province’s public health authority warns a person with measles was aboard a flight to Montreal from Madrid last Thursday.

Quebec has been struggling with a new outbreak since early December, shortly after Canada lost its status as a measles-free country more than 25 years after eradicating the virus. Before then, the province had been measles-free since April, according to Quebec’s Health Ministry.

The airliner carrying the infected person was Air Canada flight AC 835 from Madrid, and landed at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport on Jan. 8 at 3:51 p.m., according to a press release from the Ministry of Health and Social Services.

“People on board this flight who were present at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) in the arrivals and baggage area between 3:51 p.m. and 6:20 p.m. on Jan. 8, 2026, may have been exposed to the measles virus,” the press release states.

As of Jan. 16, nine confirmed cases of measles have been reported in connection with the current outbreak in Lanaudière, Laurentides, Laval and Montreal, according to the Health Ministry’s measles tracker.

The new reported case is not related to the current outbreak, according to the ministry.

The person with measles visited several places between Jan. 10 and 13. Exposure sites between these dates include:

Super C, 7401 Newman Blvd., LaSalle, on Jan. 10, 2026, between 8:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.
Salon Maniac Griffintown, 1810 Notre Dame St. W., Montreal, on Jan. 11, between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Urgence de l’Hôpital de Verdun, 4000 LaSalle Blvd., Verdun, on Jan. 12, between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Urgence de l’Hôpital de Verdun, 4000 LaSalle Blvd., Verdun, on Jan. 13, between 3:15 p.m. and 5:15 p.m.
Radiologie de l’Hôpital de Verdun, 4000 LaSalle Blvd., Verdun, on Jan. 12, between 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

First case of measles in the Lower St. Lawrence

The first confirmed case of measles was reported to the Bas-Saint-Laurent Integrated Health and Social Services Centre (CISSS) Public Health Department on February 4, 2026. The individual contracted the disease during a trip abroad. They were in a public place on January 22 in the Bic sector of Rimouski. The Bas-Saint-Laurent Public Health Department is working diligently to limit transmission in the region. Although the risk is low, secondary cases could occur in the coming weeks.

Measles prevention

For people born after 1970, vaccination is the best way to protect against measles. People born before 1970 do not need to be vaccinated, as it is assumed they were exposed to measles during their childhood. If you are unsure of your vaccination status, please call 1-888-862-3487 and select the screening option. You can also book an appointment for vaccination through Clic Santé.

Measles transmission

Measles is highly contagious through the air, and the virus can persist for up to two hours. A person can transmit measles four days before the rash appears and remains contagious for up to four days after the rash develops. It can take up to 21 days for an infected person to develop symptoms.

Symptoms and complications of measles

The classic symptoms of measles are fever, a rash and redness of the body, cough, runny nose, and red eyes (conjunctivitis). Possible complications of measles include hospitalization, ear infections, pneumonia, inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), and sometimes death. Those most at risk of complications are children under 12 months (1 year old), unvaccinated women and pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

What to do if you think you have measles

It is essential to stay home as soon as the first symptoms appear, both to avoid transmitting the illness to others and to avoid contact with people considered more at risk. If you have any doubts about your health or that of a loved one, you can contact Info-Santé at 811 to determine if you should consult a doctor.

Summary of the measles outbreak in Quebec

A measles outbreak has been ongoing in Quebec since December 1, 2025. As of February 5, 2026, 12 cases of measles have been confirmed in Quebec. In addition to the Lower St. Lawrence region, the currently affected regions are the Laurentians, Lanaudière, Laval, Montérégie, and Montreal.

The measles outbreak has ended in Quebec

It ended last week, after resulting in nine cases.

Published at 12:29 PM

The measles outbreak declared in Quebec last November ended last week, after resulting in nine cases.

During this period, three other additional cases of measles were recorded, but they were not linked to the outbreak: they had instead occurred following travel abroad.

In total, measles affected six regions: the Laurentians, Montreal, Laval, Lanaudière, Montérégie and Bas-Saint-Laurent.

This highly contagious disease is caused by a virus that is transmitted through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. The first symptoms can resemble those of a common cold, with fever, cough, and nasal congestion. However, a rash on the skin then appears.

Since there is no treatment for measles, getting immunized is the best way to protect yourself from it.

A first case of measles has been reported in Quebec City.

The infected person had recently returned from a trip abroad.

Published yesterday at 10:42 AM Updated yesterday at 1:53 PM

Sébastien Tanguay
in Quebec

Public Health reports the first case of measles in Quebec City. The infected person had recently returned from a trip abroad and had visited two public places, including the emergency room at the CHU de Québec-Université Laval (CHUL).

“It certainly increases our level of concern,” says Dr. Sara Jeanne Pelletier, a specialist in public health and preventive medicine at the Public Health Department of the CIUSSS de la Capitale-Nationale. “There is a large pool of people who may have been exposed to the case, and people who come to the hospital sometimes have pre-existing health conditions that put them at greater risk of complications.”

Public Health is conducting an investigation to identify individuals who came into contact with the infected person . This individual, a resident of the Quebec City area, visited the Médic Axion clinic on Bouvier Street on March 24 between 10:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., before going to the CHUL emergency room waiting area between 8:19 p.m. and 10:21 p.m. Admitted to Emergency Room D, she remained there until shortly after midnight on March 26.

The infected person had returned from a country experiencing a measles outbreak. Public Health is not concerned about their time on a plane and at the airport since, as Dr. Pelletier explains, "their contagious period began upon their return to the region."

This new infection brings the number of reported measles cases in Quebec to four. The other three are concentrated in the Laurentians and Montreal.

The last case of measles in the Capitale-Nationale region dates back to 2019. "It was also a person who had travelled," recalls Dr. Pelletier , "and there was no transmission in the region."

Public Health recommends that anyone who may have been in contact with this case self-isolate for 14 days after their last exposure and get vaccinated. However, people born before 1970, who have measles antibodies, who contracted the virus before 1996, or who have received two doses of the measles vaccine are protected and do not need to self-isolate.

Good vaccination coverage

Measles vaccination coverage reaches nearly 95% among high school students in the Capitale-Nationale region. However, it drops to approximately 90% among elementary school students and 80% among two-year-olds. Despite a growing global trend of vaccine hesitancy, the vaccination rate remains stable in the region.

“Our vaccination coverage rates have remained stable for the past few years,” Dr. Pelletier enthusiastically stated . “In fact, over the last two years, we have observed an increase in vaccination coverage among young people.”

The vaccination status of the infected person remains unclear. "We don't have information regarding the case's vaccination history," explains Dr. Pelletier . "That adds a little more uncertainty to the situation."

Measles, "a highly contagious disease," can lead to "serious infections." Babies under 1 year old, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women without protection are particularly at risk.

Since the beginning of 2024, Quebec has faced three measles outbreaks — the most recent of which ended a month ago.

The first case, reported to health authorities on Sunday, involved a person from Portneuf returning from a trip abroad. A second case linked to this person was subsequently confirmed.

The five new people infected since then were already in isolation, said Dr. Philippe Robert, the public health director for the Capitale-Nationale region, at a press conference. "When we learned of the first case in the outbreak, we traced the contacts. At the moment, we have more than 300."

The doctor nevertheless expects the number of cases to continue to rise over the next two weeks. "But we are doing everything we can to contain [the outbreak] afterwards," he assured.

Public health teams have already launched a catch-up vaccination campaign for those who may have been exposed to the virus. Since there is no treatment for measles, vaccination remains the best way to protect oneself.

However, some contagious individuals visited various locations in the Portneuf region, unaware at the time that they had contracted the disease. "Measles can be transmitted before symptoms appear," explained Dr. Robert .

Health authorities updated the list of locations where people may have been exposed to the virus on Thursday. These include the Caisse Desjardins in Pont-Rouge, the Jean Coutu pharmacies in Pont-Rouge and Donnacona, and the Maxi grocery store in Donnacona.

"We invite pregnant women who have not been vaccinated in the past, parents of babies under one year old and immunocompromised people to check [this list] and call Info-Santé 811 as soon as possible," said the director of public health for the Capitale-Nationale region.

A degree of "chance"

The Portneuf region is no more vulnerable to a measles outbreak than any other, the public health director emphasized. "It could have happened anywhere, actually. There's an element of chance involved. People are returning from trips. It's very variable. We've had cases in the Quebec City region before."

According to him, the resurgence of cases observed here as elsewhere is explained in particular by a decline in vaccination coverage in some countries, which promotes the circulation of the virus and complicates the control of outbreaks.

A person with measles can infect up to fifteen others. The virus spreads through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes.

The first symptoms of the illness can resemble those of a common cold, accompanied by fever, cough, nasal congestion with runny nose, and conjunctivitis. Redness then appears on the skin, first on the face, then on the body.

Measles can lead to complications such as pneumonia, loss of sight or hearing, and permanent brain damage. "It can be fatal in one out of 3,000 cases. So it's rare, but it does happen," said Dr. Robert .

In Quebec, there are currently 27 cases of the disease.
