Quebec COVID-19 deaths surpass 13,000 since the start of the pandemic

Another 73 people have died in Quebec due to COVID-19, a total of 13,009 since the start of the pandemic.

There are eight fewer Quebecers in hospital to be treated for COVID-19, a total of 3,270 people.

Intensive care admissions are down by 11, for a total of 252 people receiving care.

Of the new hospitalizations, 16 are under the age of four (an age group not eligible for vaccination) and two are between the ages of five and 11.

An additional 27 people under the age of 59 and 49 aged 60 and older are unvaccinated or received their first dose less than 14 days ago.

Four people under the age of 59 and five aged 60 and older have one dose of vaccine, while 30 people under the age of 59 and 65 aged 60 and older received their second dose of vaccine more than seven days ago.

Four people under the age of 59 and 70 aged 60 and older received their third dose more than seven days ago.

Quebec Health Minister Christian Dubé points out vaccination does not completely prevent infection, but it does decrease the risk of dire consequences.

The province's seven-day average is 4,735.

Quebec is reporting 4,150 new recorded COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of people infected to 845,564 since the start of the pandemic...

Quebec registered 56 new deaths attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic as hospitalizations fell Thursday.

The number of pandemic-related hospitalizations dropped by 117 to 3,153. This includes 235 people in intensive care units, a decrease of 17 compared with the previous day.

This comes after 231 patients were admitted while 348 left hospitals across the province in a 24-hour period.

Quebec also reported 3,956 new novel coronavirus cases, but officials have said the daily count isn’t representative of the current situation since PCR testing is limited to priority clientele, like teachers and health-care workers....

January isn’t over, but with 1,144 COVID-19 deaths reported this month in Quebec, it’s already the fifth deadliest month of the COVID-19 pandemic in the province.

As of Jan. 21, about 87 per cent of deaths linked to COVID-19 over the preceding 28 days involved people 70 and older. And unlike in previous waves, most of those who died were living at home instead of in long-term care homes or private seniors residences.

As well, of those people 70 and older who died in the current wave, 22 per cent were unvaccinated and 34.7 per cent had received a third dose of vaccine more than seven days before their deaths. The Health Department says 76 per cent of Quebecers 60 and over have received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and 94 per cent have received at least two.

Quebec began administering third doses in long-term care centres in mid-October. The government didn’t make boosters available to people 80 and older living in the community until a month later, when the campaign to give third doses to long-term care and private seniors residents was coming to an end. Appointments for boosters only opened to people 70 and older in late November.

According to data from Quebec’s public health institute, 66.4 per cent of those who died with COVID-19 this month lived in the community, up from 33.6 per cent in January 2021. In April and May 2020, the two deadliest months of the pandemic, less than 10 per cent of COVID-19 victims lived at home, and the majority of deaths reported involved people who lived in long-term care.

Quebec has reported more deaths linked to COVID-19 than any other province, both since the beginning of the pandemic and over the past two weeks, according to federal government data. The province, which accounts for less than 23 per cent of Canada’s population, reported 45.5 per cent of all COVID-19 deaths reported in the whole country over the past two weeks.

Tara Moriarty, a University of Toronto professor who wrote a report for the Royal Society of Canada on mortality linked to the pandemic, said Quebec has a better – and faster – death-reporting system than other provinces. The province also tests more people for COVID-19 after death than almost any other province, she added.

MONTREAL -- Quebec reported on Friday that there are 62 fewer hospitalizations than the day before and that intensive care numbers had dropped by seven.

Quebec's Health Ministry said 287 more patients checked into the province's hospitals for treatment and 349 were discharged.

Of the new patients, 197 were over 60 years old, with 79 of those having received their third booster dose of vaccine, 64 double-vaccinated, 52 unvaccinated and two having received one dose.

Of the 89 under 60, 28 were double-vaccinated, 27 unvaccinated, nine triple-vaccinated, and six with one dose of vaccine.

Five were fully vaccinated and between five and 11 years old, and 14 were under five years old.

Of the 20 patients transferred or admitted to ICU wards, eight had received their booster shot (seven over 60), five were double-vaccinated (four over 60), five unvaccinated (four over 60), one had received one dose and one patient was under five years old.

There are now 228 people in Quebec ICUs.

The province also reported 48 new deaths due to the novel coronavirus...

... Quebec also added 3,600 new infections for a total of 853,120 since the pandemic began. The new cases are lower than the actual infections, as PCR screening is reserved for priority clientele.

There have been 33,144 self-declared rapid tests received, including 25,082 positive results. On Thursday, 1,771 tests were declared, including 1,052 positive results.

On Jan. 26, 33,541 PCR samples were analyzed.

The Quebec Institute of Public Health (INSPQ) is monitoring 44,322 active COVID-19 cases, and there are 1,476 active outbreaks...

Quebec reported on Saturday that 66 more people have died due to COVID-19.

Since the pandemic began, 13,179 people have died due to the novel coronavirus in the province, the health ministry says.

Hospitalizations in the province dropped by a net total of 116, dropping the total hospitalizations to 2,975.

The number of patients in intensive care units increased by three to 231...

As the province prepares to reopen restaurant dining rooms on Monday, Quebec reported on Sunday that there are now 3,621,187 people in the province who have received a third booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine, which is 44 per cent of the eligible population.

That number comes after health-care professionals in the province administered 36,033 more booster shots in the past 24 hours.

The Ministry of Health says there are now 2,895 hospitalizations due to the novel coronavirus, a decrease of 80. The ministry says 180 patients checked into hospitals in the province, and 260 were discharged.

There were 119 new patients over 60 years old with 46 of those triple-vaccinated, 44 double-vaccinated, 28 unvaccinated and one person who had received one dose of vaccine. Of the 61 patients under 60, 27 were double-vaccinated, 15 unvaccinated, nine triple-vaccinated, two having received one dose and one between five and 11 years old, who was vaccinated. Seven patients were under five years old and ineligible to receive a vaccine dose.

Intensive care unit numbers increased by two, bringing that total to 233 after 22 patients were either admitted or transferred to ICUs. Of the new patients in ICUs, 14 were over 60 with seven double-vaccinated, four unvaccinated and three triple-vaccinated. There are six new ICU patients under 60 with three of those double-vaccinated, one triple-vaccinated and two under five years old...

Quebec is reporting 33 new deaths and a slight drop in hospitalizations and ICU cases on Monday.

The total number of deaths in Quebec is now 13,223 since the start of the pandemic.

The province said there are now 2,888 people in hospital, a decrease of seven from the day before, after 166 people were admitted and 173 people were discharged in the last 24 hours.

ICU cases also dropped by 10, for a total of 223.

The province says unvaccinated residents are 5.8 times more likely to be hospitalized and 10.5 times more likely to be sent to the ICU compared to those who are double-vaccinated.

There are currently 1,483 active outbreaks across the province, which is now seeing a positivity rate of 11.4 per cent. There are also 40,199 active cases in Quebec, which is a drop of 4,123 from the previous day...

Quebec is seeing a drop in ongoing COVID-19 hospitalizations, with 36 fewer patients in hospital as of Tuesday, bringing the total number of beds currently occupied to 2,852.

Intensive care admissions are down by five, for a total of 218 people receiving care.

Of the new hospitalizations, 11 are under the age of four (an age group not eligible for vaccination) and four are between the ages of five and 11.

An additional 32 people under the age of 59 and 25 aged 60 and older are unvaccinated or received their first dose less than 14 days ago.

Three people under the age of 59 and five aged 60 and older have one dose of vaccine, while 23 people under the age of 59 and 36 aged 60 and older received their second dose of vaccine more than seven days ago.

Nine people under the age of 59 and 59 aged 60 and older received their third dose more than seven days ago...

... The province's health officials also confirmed 63 more deaths, a total of 13,286.

The province's seven-day average is 3,315. On Jan. 30, a total of 21,699 samples were analyzed.

Quebec has recorded 50 new deaths due to COVID-19 as of Wednesday, with other indicators continuing to drop, showing the Omicron wave is still waning.

The total number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients dropped again from Tuesday to Wednesday, this time by over 100. There are 122 fewer people in hospital overall, for a current total of 2,730, the province reported.

That included 206 people newly admitted and 328 newly discharged.

There was a decrease of 14 patients in intensive care after 23 were admitted and 37 left the ICU unit, adding up to a current total of 204.

The province reported 3,816 new cases of the virus, but official tests are still limited to a very small sector of the population, making the number an unreliable indicator.

The positivity rate of those tests is at 11.6 per cent, roughly steady with the rate over the last two weeks.

More than 50,000 Quebecers have self-reported their home rapid tests so far using the province's new online platform.

Since yesterday, 1,000 reported new at-home positive results in the last 24 hours...

Hospitalizations continued to fall in Quebec as the province reported 42 new pandemic-related deaths Thursday.

There was a decrease of 93 for a total of 2,637 hospitalizations linked to COVID-19. Of them, 191 people were in intensive care, a drop of 13 compared with the previous day.

Health officials say 193 patients were admitted to hospital while 286 left over the past 24-hour period.

Quebec also recorded 3,592 new novel coronavirus cases as part of its daily tally. The government says this count is not representative of the situation since screening facilities are limited to priority groups...

Quebec is reporting 42 new deaths linked to the novel coronavirus on Friday as pandemic-related hospitalizations continue to decline.

Health officials said 200 COVID-19 patients were admitted and 296 were discharged for a decrease of 96 over the previous day.

Of the 2,541 patients, 184 are in intensive care, down by seven over Thursday.

There were 3,400 new cases of the disease confirmed bringing the caseload since the start of the health crisis to 875,429...

Quebec COVID-19 hospitalizations continued to drop on Saturday though the province reported another day with over 30 deaths due to the novel coronavirus.

Net hospitalizations dropped by 94 for a total of 2,447. Of those, 181 people are in intensive care units, a decrease of three.

The Ministry of Health said 168 patients checked into provincial hospitals for care and 262 were discharged.

Of the new patients, 108 were over 60 years old with 50 of those triple-vaccinated, 34 double-vaccinated, 21 unvaccinated and three having received one dose of vaccine.

Of the 60 patients 59 years old and younger, 24 were double-vaccinated, 23 unvaccinated, seven triple-vaccinated and one having received a single dose. Three patients were under five years old and two were between five and 11 and considered fully vaccinated.

Of the 16 patients transferred or admitted to ICUs, five were unvaccinated (four over 60, one under), five were double-vaccinated (three over 60, two under), four were triple-vaccinated (three over 60, one under), one between five and 11 and considered fully vaccinated, and one patient is under five years old...

Quebec reported on Sunday that 22 more people have died due to COVID-19, as hospitalizations in the province continue to drop.

Since the start of the pandemic, 13,475 people in Quebec are reported to have died due to the novel coronavirus.

The Ministry of Health says there are 36 fewer patients in provincial hospitals and intensive care unit numbers dropped by four.

Hospitals accepted 169 new patients for treatment and released 205, for a total of 2,411, including 177 in ICUs.

Of the new patients, 116 were over 60 years old with 56 of those triple-vaccinated, 37 double-vaccinated, 20 unvaccinated, and three having received one dose of vaccine.

Of those under 60, nine were under five years old and ineligible to receive a vaccine, four were between five and 11 and considered fully vaccinated, while 11 were triple vaccinated, 14 double-vaccinated, 12 unvaccinated and two people had received a single dose of vaccine before checking into the hospital.

Of those patients transferred or admitted to ICUs, five were over 60 (three triple-vaccinated, two unvaccinated), and eight were under 60 (five double-vaccinated, one unvaccinated and two under five years old)...
