Confirmed cases of measles in the region

The Public Health Department is monitoring the situation

JOLIETTE THE 11 February 2015 - The laboratory test results that were expected in recent days confirmed that the suspected cases are cases of measles.

So far, ten cases of measles (high fever, cough, conjunctivitis and eruption skin) have been reported to the Public Health Department (PHD) of the Agency Health and Social Services of Lanaudi?re.

Confirmed cases - a situation closely followed

It is important to remember that the ten cases are not vaccinated against measles, they are all related, and they reside in the Lanaudi?re region. The Public Health Department also confirmed that according to the survey Epidemiological, the first case contracted the virus during a visit to a park in California, where other cases have been reported.

Contacts reached

People who have been in contact with the cases were reached. No public place or school is concerned.

"The recommended protection and control measures have been put in place from the first case. DSP is closely following the situation. We advised clinicians of the region to declare any suspected case of measles quickly, "acknowledges the Dr. Joane D?silets, medical adviser to the Public Health Department.

Vaccination, the best protection

Although measles is contagious, people who have been vaccinated are protected. The vaccine against measles is included in the immunization schedule of Qu?bec. It is administered at age 12 months and 18 months. "The vaccine against measles is very effective and is the best protection against the disease and its complications, "says Dr. Desilets. For people who are not certain to have received proper vaccination, it is recommended to check the book vaccination. They can confirm with their family doctor or from the CLSC of their territory. Note that people born before 1970 are considered protected
against measles.
