H1N1 patient still serious, one more result awaited

LUDHIANA: Doctors in Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), who are treating swine flu patient Vijay Kumar on Sunday said his condition is serious and he is on ventilator. Vijay, who was staying in Shimlapuri, tested positive for swine flu on Friday night and has been admitted at DMCH since.

Another suspected case of the flu has been brought to the hospital and doctors have kept him in isolation while they await the result of his blood sample from PGI, Chandigarh. Dr Rajesh Mahajan, who is treating Vijay said, ''We have been giving him medicines and are hoping his body will respond well."

Three confirmed H1N1 cases in Punjab

CHANDIGARH: Three confirmed cases of H1N1 in the past 10 days have led to a scare in Punjab. While two patients admitted in the DMC, Ludhiana, have been discharged, a 55 years old woman is critical and admitted in ICU of a hospital in Mohali.

Confirming these cases, nodal officer of Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, Punjab, Deepak Bhatia said, "On September 6, Balbir Kaur from Hoshiarpur was admitted with the flu in Ludhiana. On September 13, Sukhdeep Singh from Doraha, Ludhiana, was also admitted in the same hospital with the flu. The third patient is from Mohali."

The first H1N1 case from the region this year was reported from Kurukshetra on April 1. Another case was confirmed two days later, from Nayagoan in Punjab, when a 33-year-old nurse in PGI contracted the influenza while attending to a patient in one of the ICUs.

This flu is no longer a pandemic, which one can contract from someone. "We have enough Tamiflu stock and have vaccinated our health workers. There is no connection these days with travel history and the virus," said Bhatia.

In the last two years, Punjab has grappled with over 300 flu cases. Between 2009 and 2010, 252 people in the state had tested positive, while 73 had died of the flu.

Two years ago, a PGI nurse had been infected with the flu and over 30 doctors tested positive. In 2010, a 55-year-old resident of Mandi district in Himachal had died of H1N1 at a private hospital in Mohali.

LUDHIANA: A day after a middle-aged man from Atam Nagar, Jagjit Singh, died of swine flu at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), two more patients tested positive for the disease and are battling for life at the same hospital. The health authorities, however, say that they had already provided doses of "Tamiflu" to the patients' kin.

Another patient tests positive for swine flu in Punjab

LUDHIANA: With one more patient testing positive for swine flu on Saturday, the total number of cases this year in Punjab has reached 10. Of these, six cases have been reported from various hospitals of Ludhiana.

Dr Deepak Bhatia, state nodal officer, said, "Three samples were for swine flu screening on Friday. While the sample of a patient from Karnal admitted to SPS Apollo Hospital in Ludhiana has tested positive, those of two patients, one recuperating at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) and one at Pathankot, tested negative. Meanwhile, the family members and those came in close contact of swine flu patient have already been given Tamiflu, he added.

Dr Gurpreet Singh, senior consultant and joint coordinator of pulmonary and critical care medicine at SPS Apollo, who is attending to the swine flu patient, said "The patient was admitted to our hospital on Sunday evening with severe breathlessness so I suspected it to be a case of swine flu. The patient is still on ventilator, but is a stable and responding to the treatment".

Industrialist tests positive for H1N1


LUDHIANA: An industrialist tested positive for swine flu on Friday. State nodal officer for swine flu Dr Deepak Bhatia said: "We received six samples and one tested positive for the flu. The patient was admitted to Mohandai Oswal Multi-speciality and Cancer Hospital in Ludhiana. With this, the total number of swine flu cases has reached 12."

Sources in the health department said the patient was admitted with flu-like symptoms a week ago and a sample was sent to PGI in Chandigarh for analysis. The report was received on Friday which confirmed the infection.

Hospital sources said: "The patient responded well to the treatment and his condition became stable. He was discharged from hospital today. The health authorities would provide Tamiflu vaccine to his kin."

Swine flu claims a life in Patiala

PATIALA: Swine flu has claimed one life in Patiala after the flu getting diagnosed in Ludhiana. The deceased has been identified as Jasbir Singh and he was from the SST Nagar area of Patiala.

Jasbir had recently returned from Georgia in the United States of America. He was complaining of ill health after coming from the USA. Following this, he was admitted to DMC Ludhiana on October 2. He underwent a lot of tests after getting admitted at the hospital. The reports confirmed swine flu on October 8.

Dr Gurmeet Singh stated that Jasbir was a sugar patient. He stated that all 24 people who had come in Jasbir?s contact are all doing well after taking Tamiflu dose for 10 days.
