A 15-year-old resident, Nanhey Kumar, died of suspected diarrhoea in New Harbans Nagar locality on Wednesday night.
Nanhey, a resident of Gopalganj district in Bihar, had come to the city to stay with his father Jawahar Prasad (42), who works as a labourer. Rajesh Kumar, a cousin of the deceased, said the Nanhey started vomiting and getting loose motions at around 11 pm.
"The problem aggravated in the night. Before we could call a doctor, the boy died at about 2 am," said Rajesh. "We don't know the exact cause of the death. However, it seems certain that the child died of water loss, due to the vomiting and loose motion."

With the beginning of the rainy season, water-borne diseases have become increasingly common. A five-month-old girl, Sunaina, died due to diarrhoea in the Manjit Nagar locality in Basti Guzan. Local bodies minister Chunni Lal Bhagat represents the area in the assembly. Nearly 25 residents are also suffering from stomach-related ailments.

Cholera scare in Badungar colony

As feared, three confirmed cases of cholera were reported from Badungar Colony in the city on Friday. Three people had died on Thursday in the colony due to suspected diarrhoea cases. The health department had taken 13 stool samples for the test of cholera. "Three samples have been found positive for cholera. We have taken 14 more stool samples for cholera tests. An ambulance has been permanently deployed in the area till further orders. A team of epidemiologists is also camping in the colony," said Dr VS Mohi, civil surgeon, Patiala.
All the cholera-hit patients have been put under special surveillance in Government Rajindra Medical College and Hospital, he said.

In Sanjay Colony, where more than 100 cases of gastroenteritis were reported last week, four patients were found to be suffering from cholera.

Local bodies minister Chuni Lal Bhagat visited his constituency to take stock of the situation arising due to the spread of water-borne diseases, especially diarrhoea in the area. Four deaths due to diarrhoea were reported this week. Bhagat visited Abadpura and Manjit Nagar localities,


the worst affected areas. He instructed the municipal corporation officials to speed up work on repairing the fault responsible for contamination in water supplied to the residents.

Punjab Minister takes note of cholera cases

Chandigarh, Jul 24 (PTI) Punjab Local Bodies Minister Chunni Lal Bhagat today reviewed incidence of spread of cholera and gastro enteritis cases in some districts of the state. Issuing strict instructions to all officials of Civic Bodies to take remedial steps, he said there was an urgent need to find out reasons for the spread of these diseases.

Diarrhoea patients' count crosses 500 in Dasuya

The number of patients suffering from diarrhoea in Dasuya has crossed the 500 mark with the diagnosis of 125 more cases of the water-borne disease in ward numbers 11, 12 and 13 of local Mohalla Kaintha.
The patients were diagnosed positive for the disease during a special camp held


by the health department on Friday.
Dasuya Senior Medical Officer Dr Naresh Kansra revealed that 23 new patients have been admitted in the hospital while many others were given medicines during the camp.

There seem to be no let up in the cases of diarrhoea in Dasuya, as over 100 new patients were diagnosed as suffering from the water-borne disease on Saturday.

The count of patients has till now crossed over 600. Most lived in Mohala Kaintha of Dasuya where people are said to have used contaminated water supplied through public taps.

A-28 year old resident of ward no. 11 of local Mohalla Kaintha, worst-affected area due to contaminated water supply, died at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) in Chandigarh on Saturday midnight. Pawan Kumar (28) was admitted to local civil hospital for treatment of diarrhoea on July 27 and was referred to Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences in Jalandhar due to his deteriorating condition. From there, he had been referred to PGI, Chandigarh on Saturday

45 suspected diarrhoea patients in hospital

There was panic in Chak Mehra village on Monday as suspected diahhroea patients started reporting to hospitals in the area from early morning. By Monday evening, 130 patients had been examined. Of these, 45 were admitted in the civil hospital and four in a private nursing home. Six patients from the civil hospital were later discharged. At least one patient is suspected to have died of the disease, though the health authorities did not confirm it.
"There are rumours that three patients have died of diarrhoea but only one patient, Chanan Kaur, is learnt to have had diarrhea problem but she had other health issues too. She died in a private hospital on August 3. No other death has been caused by stomach infection," civil surgeon Dr Avtar Singh Jarewal said.

PATIALA: Lack of sanitation in the dalit colony of Rampura Padta village under Patran sub-division has cost its inhabitants dear as diarrhoea has claimed the life of a one-year-old child and afflicted 15 other children and 11 youngsters. The Patiala civil surgeon (CS) had toured the affected village, but dalits alleged that there was no improvement in health services even after his visit.

Diarrhoea outbreak in Sanaur; 20 cases reported so far

Twenty cases of acute diarrhoea were reported from the Sanaur area of the district on Friday. Two people had died of the disease about a fortnight ago.
Epidemiological cause for the outbreak in the area was water contamination, as drainage line was chocked.

Failing water samples alerts health dept

CHANDIGARH: Sixteen persons have died in Batala due to cholera outbreak but the far more serious situation in Moga is grabbing attention of the state health authorities. With water samples of the municipal corporation in Batala failing tests at four more places, this is the 15th time during this year that the deadly waterborne disease has claimed lives in the state.

While there are 27 patients suffering from cholera admitted at hospitals in Batala, Moga hospitals are tending to nearly 110 such patients. One person died in Moga on October 8 even as the disease has claimed seven lives in Batala's hospitals and nine lives outside the hospitals since October 4.
