I find much of this report confusing. Some of the numbers in this report are suspect. There are only 176 total confirmed positive cases for the whole state of Punjab since last Summer, the figure of 180 for Ludhiana alone is incorrect. The 141 fresh cases cannot again refer to Ludhiana alone, but must be referring, at least in part, to recent numbers from Kerala. There were no recorded cases in Punjab this week (to June 20th), and the last confirmed case was March 20th.
In essence this report is saying that there is 1 case pending confirmation in Punjab, but that in light of outbreaks elsewhere, the state surveillance department is increasing awareness amongst government doctors.

LUDHIANA: With the first case of swine flu being reported from Jalandhar, it seems that the health department is not concerned much as the isolation ward meant for swine flu patients is being used for gastro patients.

It seems that the monsoon is already keeping the health department on toes as the gastroenteritis cases are pouring in along with the new scare of the H1N1.

After Lovepreet Singh from Jalandhar tested positive for H1N1 from Regional Testing Lab Department of Virology, his became first case in Punjab this year.

While giving information, one of the officials of the health department said that already the guidelines had been sent to all the districts to get prepared for any kind of emergency. He added that for this all the hospitals had been told to maintain isolation rooms, along with the ventilators.

On the condition of anonymity, one of the medical officer at Civil Hospital said that there was a permanent isolation room but due to high number of gastro cases, it was being used for them.

According to the information last year during the swine flu outbreak in the state, a total of 1,041 beds in the isolation wards were there. Of these, 437 were with civil hospitals while 604 were with the private hospitals. As far as ventilators were concerned, a total of 160 were available and out of this 86 were in the government and 74 in private hospitals.

Dr Deepak Bhatia, state nodal officer, National Integrated Surveillance Department, said that already all the districts had been issued the directions to get ready and make all the necessary arrangements. He added that last week all the districts had been issued the directions to make necessary arrangements.

Amritsar, Aug 9 (IANS) A middle-aged woman died of swine flu in Punjab, authorities said Monday.
This was the first case of swine flu in Amritsar in 2010.

?The deceased was identified as Malti Devi, 48. She was suffering from running nose, sore throat and headache and had come to us last week for treatment. Earlier she was going to some private hospital,? said Hardeep Singh Ghai, district nodal officer for swine flu, here Monday evening.

?She was kept in an isolated ward in the civil hospital here. We sent her nasal swab samples for tests and her reports confirmed she was suffering from swine flu. We are scrutinizing the health of all those who were in direct contact with her,? he added.

During the last winters, at least 50 people of Punjab and Chandigarh died due to swine flu.

LUDHIANA: With surfacing of first suspected case of H1N1 on Tuesday evening in the city, swine flu scare is back. The blood samples of patient have been sent for lab tests.

As monsoon was already raining gastroenteritis, malaria, dengue cases in the city and keeping the health department on toes, now H1N1 was slowly gripping the region.

Sources said a 35-year-old resident of Ferozepur had been admitted to a private hospital in Ludhiana in a critical condition. Late on Tuesday night, her blood samples were taken and sent for tests.

Earlier, a case from Jalandhar had tested positive for H1N1 in a lab report from Regional Testing Lab Department of Virology. Another case was reported from Amritsar in which the patient died.

While giving information, a health department official said that already guidelines had been sent to all the districts so as to get prepared for any kind of emergency. He added that for this all the hospitals had been told to maintain isolation rooms, along with ventilators.

According to the information last year during the outbreak in the state, there were 1,041 beds in the isolation rooms. Of this 437 were with civil hospitals while 604 were with the private hospitals.

H1N1 patient admitted in city

LUDHIANA: While another H1N1 case was admitted to a city hospital, on Thursday, the report of the patient, who was suspected to have contacted H1N1 on Tuesday, came negative.

It seems that the monsoon is already keeping the health department on toes as after the gastroenteritis and malaria cases now its H1N1 flu which was slowly gripping its clutches in the region.

As per information gathered the patient had been admitted at a private hospital in Ludhiana. The patient was brought to hospital in a critical condition and late on Wednesday night sample had been taken and sent for tests. His report came as positive on Thursday evening.

However, the report of 35-year-old patient from Ferozepur had turned out to be negative.

Earlier, a case from Jalandhar had tested positive for H1N1 in a test from Regional Testing Lab Department of Virology and after that second case was reported from Amritsar in which the patient died.

3 samples sent to lab

LUDHIANA: Once again, the alarming bells are ringing loud for the health department as the H1N1 has started again raising its head in the city. On Monday, three more suspected blood samples were sent to a lab for checking.

As per the information two samples are sent from Christian Medical College and Hospital and one from Dayanand Medical College and Hospital. The report of these will come on Tuesday.

To check the spread of influenza-kind of symptoms, the district health department will depute the medical officer at PHCS. Once the doctor feels that the symptoms are like influenza, then the patient will be referred to Civil Hospital where it will be screened again and after that the diagnosis will be given.

While numbers of cases are increasing with each passing day, doctors, too, are becoming the victim of this flu as on Saturday itself a former ESICdirector tested positive for the flu. Treatment has been given to the family members and those who came in contact with him.

Dr Santosh Bharti, epidemiologist, National Integrated Surveillance Department, said that on Monday three samples had been sent from the city and report was expected by Tuesday evening. He added that in swine flu, early detection could help the patients.

Sources said two patients suspected to be suffering from swine flu -- a Hoshiarpur resident and a Kot Mangla woman -- were admitted to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital. Both died later and samples of both the patients were sent for testing. One of the reports later turned out to be positive.

Giving information, a health official said advisory guidelines had already been sent to all districts for them to be prepared for any kind of emergency. He added that for this, all hospitals had been told to maintain isolation rooms along with ventilators.

Sources said last year, during swine flu outbreak in the state, 1041 beds were set up in the isolation rooms. Of these, 437 beds were with civil hospitals while 604 were with the private hospitals. As far as ventilators are concerned, a total of 160 ventilators are available. Out of this, 86 are in government hospitals and 74, in private hospitals.

While the cases are increasing with every passing day, the health authorities have given instructions to private hospitals not to disclose any information directly to mediapersons.

Dr Santosh Bharti, epidemiologist, National Integrated Surveillance Department, said while one sample had tested swine flu-negative, another one had tested positive for H1N1. He added till reports come in, it is difficult to say whether the deaths are actually a result of the flu or not.

Ludhiana One more patient has tested positive for swine flu. Fifty-five-year-old Amarjit Kaur is the third person to test positive with the H1N1 virus in the city.
State nodal officer for the integrated disease surveillance programme, Dr Deepak Bhatia, said, ?We received six samples on Monday of which one tested positive.?

Kaur is being treated at Christian Medical College and Hospital. The other two patients are Deepak Kumar and Dr Y C Markan, former director of Health Services, Punjab.

To make people aware about swine flu and diseases in the monsoon, Dr Satwant Bhalla, Civil Surgeon
, Ludhiana, visited areas such as Maharaj Nagar, Kitchlu Nagar, New Prem Nagar, Upkar Nagar, Durga Puri, Joshi Nagar, Adarsh Nagar etc. The mass media team of the department gave tips to the public in general for saving themselves from these diseases.

Dr Bhalla said the main city hospitals have made all arrangement for swine flu patients. ?We have 66 beds with ventilators in different major hospitals of the city,? she said.

LUDHIANA: H1N1 has made a comeback in the region as the first swine flue death has been reported in the city on late Thursday night. What has further caused concern among the authorities is that one more positive case has come to the notice of medical authorities in Ludhiana, taking the H1N1 count to four in the city.

Fifty-five-year-old Amarjeet Kaur was admitted in the Christian Medical College and Hospital with complaints of difficulty in breathing. Her sample was taken on August 16, while she was tested positive the very next day. Kaur had to be put on a ventilator on Thursday night, when she breathed her last.

With this, Punjab has recorded its second swine flu death in the recent while. The first case was reported from Amritsar. In 2009, 252 cases and 40 deaths were reported from the state.

While giving information, an official of the health department stated that advisories had already been issued to all the districts so as to prepare them for any emergency. "For this, all hospitals have been told to maintain isolation rooms as well as ventilators," he added.

H1N1 kills one in Punjab


Swine flu today claimed one life in Punjab taking the death toll from the disease in the state to four this month, even as 17 fresh cases of H1N1 infection were reported in Rajasthan.

Gurmeet Singh, 43, a resident of Chandigarh, died of swine flu today at a private hospital in Mohali, state's nodal officer Dr Deepak Bhatia said.

Four persons have lost their lives due to the deadly infection in the state.

Out of the total 39 suspected cases, six tested positive and are being treated at various hospitals, he said.

Meanwhile, 17 people were tested positive for swine flu in Rajasthan, taking the total number of H1N1 positive cases in the state to 145 since April.

"The positive cases were reported from Jaipur, Alwar, Udaipur, Karauli, Dausa and Chittorgarh. The patients are being treated," OP Gupta, director (public health), state medical and health department, said.

Eleven people have so far succumbed to the viral infection since April, he said.

Swine flu claims another life in Punjab

Pathankot, Sept 6 (PTI) A factory labourer from Assam suffering from swine flu died here today, taking the death toll due to the disease in the state to six this season.
Pathankot civil Hospital Senior Medical Officer Dr Achala Bhatia said two youths Nittu Chalia (26) and Charan Das (28), both residents of Gho village, suffering from swine flu were admitted in the hospital on Saturday.
Chalia, who was kept on ventilators due to breathing problems and running high fever, was given Tamiflu medicine but the patient did not respond and died today.
According to the kin, Chalia, who hailed from Dibrugarh in Assam, was working as a factory labourer.

Rotary Club launches campaign against swine flu

Rotary Club, Ludhiana, launched a mass awareness campaign for generating awareness about swine flu at Pratap College of Education, Hambran Road, Ludhiana. It started with a guest lecture about various aspects of swine flu including its causes, treatment and prevention by Dr Sandeep Puri, Medical Suptertendent. A leaflet giving detail of precautions was also released on the occasion. In his keynote address, Dr Sandeep Puri said swine flu needs immediate attention and awareness among the public. The common symptoms of a swine flu are high fever along with cough, running nose, sore throat, headache, chills, fatigue, tiredness, nausea and diarrhea.

One more succumb to swine flu in Pun; toll touches seven

Patiala(Pun), Sept 19 (PTI) One more person has died due to swine flu in Punjab, taking the death toll due to the H1N1 virus in the state this season to seven.

Inder Mohan Singh (36), a resident of factory area here, succumbed to the virus last evening at the PGIMER in Chandigarh.

According to the victim's family, he was admitted to the hospital last week after suffering from cold and high fever.

Hospital authorities confirmed that he died due to swine flu.

Second H1N1 death reported in Mohali

Another swine flu death was reported at Fortis Hospital in Mohali on Tuesday. This was the second H1N1 death here in the past less than a month.



A resident of Mandi in Himachal Pradesh Jai Chand Thakur (55) died of H1N1, confirmed the Fortis Hospital spokesperson this evening. He was admitted to the hospital with swine flu symptoms on September 11 and was tested positive for the virus on September 14. ?He was been under treatment in an isolated ward but today suddenly his condition deteriorated and he died,? informed the spokesperson.



On August 26, another H1N1 patient Gurmeet Singh (43), a resident of Sector 36, Chandigarh, had died at Fortis Hospital. Though Gurmeet tested positive for swine flu, but since he was suffering from other chronic diseases as well, he had died of cardiac arrest, the hospital had claimed.



Meanwhile, the cases of H1N1 and dengue fever have seen a spurt in Mohali during the past few days. Besides two swine flu deaths and six positive cases of swine flu, over 50 cases of dengue fever have been reported at Fortis Hospital alone in the last about a month.


With the district health department not releasing any update on H1N1, dengue or other viral diseases, the number of such cases could be higher as those admitted at government and other private hospitals remain unreported.

Death of two persons due to swine flu (H1N1) in the Malwa region of the state has rung the warning bells for the Health Department authorities.

Both swine flu patients were from Bathinda and Ferozepur and were undergoing treatment, respectively in the DMC, Ludhiana and PGI, Chandigarh, where they succumbed last evening.

Private practitioners by whom they were being treated referred the two patients to the DMC and PGI.

The authorities in these two main towns of the Malwa region were probably complacent about the disease that had earlier also appeared here. The special isolation ward for swine flu patients that was hurriedly established in the civil hospital here two years ago on directions of the Union Health Ministry was later thrown open for other patients.

Health dept without policy, funds to control H1N1


LUDHIANA: The health department is relying on the assumption that outbreak of swine flu occurs every alternate year and hence, it might spare residents this winter. It did not frame any policy to control the viral disease nor allotted funds to the district. However, doctors from various private hospitals are divided in their opinion on this issue.

District epidemiologist Dr GP Mangla said swine flu is a viral disease and like dengue, it strikes alternate years. Urging city residents not to press the panic button by undergoing test for H1N1 if they suffer from common cold, Dr Mangla said the city did not witness any case since July. But warning residents to take precautions, he added that the health department in association with Indian Medical Association had hosted many seminars to generate awareness among them.

But sounding cautious, Dr Rajoo Singh Chinna of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital termed this assumption to be utterly baseless. Viral disease might spread rapidly with the change in weather. Citing cases reported till date, he said younger people were more prone to swine flu.

Meanwhile, refusing to make any statement, Medical superintendent of Christian Medical College and Hospital Dr Kanwal Massih said it would be very early to predict if swine flu would spread or not. Things would become clear only when winter season sets in, he added.

Citing the health department officials failure to control dengue last year, residents are worried about the spread of swine flu as the winter season is about to set in. There is no plan to control the menace.

A city dweller, Pradeep Kumar, said the administration at large and the health department, in particular, adopted an arrogant attitude. Winters have been a concern for the authorities for long. They failed to control dengue, pressing the alarm button among residents. hence, they should be prepared to tackle H1N1, he added.

Note: There were 4 fatalities in August, we had recorded 5 in September, this report adds 2 more and 3 in 2011 for a total of 14 this winter, and one further fatality under investigation.

Swine flu surfaces, three die

The winter is at its end but swine flu has claimed three lives in the state already this year.



Confirming this, Dr Deepak Bhatia, State Nodal Officer for the Integrated Disease surveillance Programme, said: ?There were seven deaths between September and December 2010, and this year we have already reported three deaths.

One Chameli Devi from Bathinda district is under treatment at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital. The disease is yet to be confirmed in the case of Pardeep Sharma (35) who died a few days ago.

JALANDHAR: A test report from National Institute of Communicable Diseases has confirmed that Kapurthala resident, Anand Kishor Sood, 42, who died at a private hospital on Tuesday, was suffering from H1N1.

Doctors had sent his samples for testing on the day he died. Health department got the report on Thursday. Nodal officer of integrated disease surveillance project of health department, Dr Deepak Bhatia, said that Sood had returned from Germany and was admitted in a hospital on Monday.

Youth dies of swine flu

Fathegrah Sahib (Pun), Feb 20 (PTI) A newly-married man died of swine flu in a hospital at Banur near here, officials said today.
Thirty-year-old Kulwinder Singh, hailing from Nalini village, breathed his last at Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital yesterday.
Kulwinder was also suffering from acute asthma for the past some time, they said.
Health authorities said family members and friends of the deceased would be quarantined.
Kulwinder''s death has sparked panic in the village, residents said.
