Schools move to keep flu away

H1N1: PMC asks principals to keep premises clean, take precautions if wards fall ill

With students back on campuses after the summer break, many schools in the city have started taking precautions against a possible outbreak of swine flu. Medical experts have also urged people not to panic but take proper precautions.

This time around, awareness of the disease has come in handy. Besides, experts say panic level among parents is low with the swine flu vaccine made available in the market.

The education board of Pune Municipal Corporation conducted a meeting of school principals last week. ?Besides informing them about the RTE Act, we spoke to them about the precautions to be taken in the wake of a possible outbreak of swine flu,? board head Ramchandra Jadhav said. ?We have asked them to keep premises clean and take precautions if students fall ill.?

PMC chief medical officer RR Pardeshi said, ?Since this is a season in which cough and cold are common, teachers should keep a watch. We are also prepared with medicines and necessary things to tackle any situation. Our ward medical officers will be visiting schools and colleges for giving information on swine flu.?

The schools are also doing their part. ?We have instructed students and parents on steps to avoid illness such as eating healthy food, drinking hot milk with turmeric and doing pranayam. We fumigated our premises a day before we reopened,? said Symbiosis School principal Leena Chaudhary.

Authorities of Abhinav English Medium School, where the first case of swine flu was reported last year, said they would conduct a parents-teachers? meeting next week on precautionary steps. ?We have been avoiding assembly at the school and following the PMC instructions last year,? a school official said.

2 schoolchildren in city test positive for H1N1 influenza
Umesh Isalkar , TNN, Jun 22, 2010, 01.59am IST

PUNE: Two school students have tested positive for the H1N1 influenza, barely days after the monsoon has begun and the new academic session got under way.

A 12-year-old student from a school in Pune Camp tested positive on June 17 while a senior KG student from a school in Pashan tested positive on June 19. Earlier, on June 7, a 24-year-old management student also tested positive for the infection.

?While the management student has recovered fully, the two school students have been isolated at home and are recuperating,? A C Kante, assistant deputy director of the state health services, said on Monday.

Kante said there was no need to panic as the health authorities have enough stock of Tamiflu and, additionally, the preventive vaccine against swine flu was also available in the market now.

It may be recalled that a serological survey undertaken by the National Institute of Virology (NIV), which tested 12,000 blood samples, had revealed that 35 per cent of Pune?s student population is now immune to the H1N1 virus. Twenty-five per cent doctors and 20 per cent slum-dwellers have also developed immunity. The only group with less immunity is the adult office-going population, the study had stated. The survey was initiated from August 15 last year and carried out in three phases till November-end.

As many as six schoolchildren have been infected with the H1N1 virus since June 10 this year, a report from the Deputy Director of Health office says. They are students of nurseries located at Mohammedwadi and Wakad, said the officials. ?We are taking precautionary measures,? said Dr Sharad Agharkhedkar, president of the Pune unit of the Indian Medical Association. Vaccines against swine flu have been recommended by both IMA and the Indian Paediatric Association, said Agharkhedkar.

There have been 223 H1N1 cases in the city with 34 deaths from April till June this year. Dr Sanjay Gupte, president, Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Society of India, pregnant women should try not to come in contact with patients with respiratory illnesses. People with sore throat, fever and cough should consult a doctor, he said.

Monsoon showers raise Swine Flu concerns in Pune

STAFF WRITER 13:59 HRS IST
Pune, Jun 26 (PTI) The monsoon showers here have revived fears of a spurt in Swine Flu cases in the city which reported its 245th victim of the virus early this week even as health authorities claimed that they were now better equipped to deal with the H1N1 threat.

A 26-year-old pregnant woman died of Swine Flu last Monday in the government Sassoon hospital becoming the 32nd casualty in the city out of the 62 deaths reported in the last three months in Maharashtra.

With the schools reopeneing last week, three students have already tested positive for the H1N1 virus and were being treated home quarantined.

This, however, has not diluted the optimism of civic and state health authorities who assert that as compared to the situation witnessed in the city last year, the positive cases this time around have been showing a "decreasing trend".

City schools give kids special breaks to wash hands and keep H1N1 virus at bay; some even get innovative with jingles and street plays to make it fun

"RUB, rub, rub it clean; wipe, wipe, wipe it dry," resounds the room as 100-odd kindergarten students of New India School clean their hands. The children keep chanting the lines in their singsong voices till the teachers are sure all of them have washed their hands properly.

Intra-nasal H1N1 vaccine launched in market
TNN, Jul 9, 2010, 04.16am IST

PUNE: A consignment of 200 vials of Nasovac the first indigenous intra-nasal swine flu vaccine developed by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India arrived in the city market on Thursday. The vaccine can be administered to people aged above three years.

Mahendra Pitaliya, chief co-ordinator of the chemists' association of Pune district, on Thursday said, "We have received a consignment of 200 multi-dose vials of the vaccine, which is in the form of nasal spray". It is available at Anand Enterprises and Swastic Medical Stores in Sadashiv Peth.

The multiple dose (five ml) vial of vaccine contains five doses. A vial costs Rs 790. "A dose of the vaccine at private clinics and hospitals will cost Rs 158," Pitaliya said. It is being marketed under the brand name Nasovac, he added.

Earlier in last month, India unveiled its first-ever indigenous intra muscular vaccine against H1N1 virus, created by Ahmedabad based pharmaceutical company, Zydus Cadila. The vaccine, called Vaxiflu-S, costs around Rs 350 for a single dose. The injectible intra-muscular vaccine can be administered to people aged above 18 years.

The new intra nasal vaccine is in powder form and has to be reconstituted by adding the supplied water. "It is delivered in the nose through a device fitted on top of a syringe. A quick spray in each nostril and the body develops antibodies against H1N1," Pitaliya said.

"High-risk group patients, including patients of asthma, hypertension, heart disease and diabetes, should go for the shot as a preventive measure. Data reveals that mortality due to the pandemic H1N1 influenza is more in high-risk patients," said Sharad Agarkhedkar, president of the city unit of Indian Medical Association. As many as 251 people have fallen victim to the H1N1 influenza in Pune district till date. A considerable number of them had associated co-morbid conditions, Agarakhedkar added.

32 test positive for swine flu in Pune

Pune, July 12:
As many as 26 school going children and 6 college students in the city have tested positive for H1N1 virus since the onset of monsoon and start of the new academic year.
Of the total of 32 students who tested positive for the virus, most have recovered, a state heath official said.
''There is no need to panic as the health authorities have enough tamiflu and additionally the preventive vaccines against swine flu are also available in the market now,'' the official said.
Parents have been advised not to send their chlidren to schools if they are unwell, said a health official from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
It may be recalled that a seroligical survey undertaken by the National Institute of Virology (NIV), which tested 12,000 blood samples, had revealed that 35 per cent of pune's student population are now immune to the HIN1 virus. 25 per cent doctors and 20 per cent slum dwellers have also developed immunity. Pune records highest number of H1N1 deaths
Umesh Isalkar, TNN, Jul 23, 2010, 04.40am IST

PUNE: As many as 99 people succumbed to the H1N1 influenza in the state against 1,174 positive cases since April. The mortality rate vis-?-vis fresh cases has been very high in Pune district as 53 people fell victim to the virus with 463 positive cases. Whereas Mumbai recorded 17 deaths against 436 positive cases during the same period.

"This is primarily because the H1N1 cases are now springing up from rural areas which remained unscathed last year. Besides, there is a sudden rise in critical cases requiring artificial respiration. In June, the mortality rate vis-?-vis the number of severely positive cases had gone down. However, with the rise in critically ill patients this month, more casualties were reported from Pune district," said state health officials.

Citing reasons for the high death rate, Arun Jamkar, dean of the Sassoon hospital, said: "It has been observed that other designated hospitals move or refer swine flu patients to the isolation ward of Sassoon when the patients' condition has worsened. Besides, we get patients from all over western Maharashra. This has also added to the high number of deaths in Pune district."

"Moreover, with the fall in temperature, there is a sudden rise in critical cases requiring artificial respiration this month," said a health official. "During May and June, the average number of critically ill patients were not more than 10 per week."

The country's preparedness to deal with a fresh wave of swine flu pandemic, that could be worse than before, was reviewed at a meeting presided over by the cabinet secretary in New Delhi recently. The meeting, which was attended by Union health ministry's top brass, including health secretary K Sujatha Rao and ICMR director-general V M Katoch, came to the conclusion that the virus had got entrenched in India and would soon replace the seasonal influenza strain to become the dominant virus causing fever, cough and cold. If not treated early with Tamilfu people are more prone to dye of it than the seasonal bug.

'H1N1 finds favourable conditions during rains'
Umesh Isalkar, TNN, Jul 26, 2010, 03.19am IST

PUNE: Going by the number of fresh cases of swine flu ? an average of 25 to 30 every day ? the infection rate of H1N1 influenza has increased significantly in Pune district in July.

As many as 341 cases have been recorded till date this month, as against 77 cases in June. The mortality rate vis-?-vis infected cases is also witnessing a rise with 25 deaths having been registered this month as against nine in the previous month.

"Most of the cases this month are from the rural parts of the district. The virus is making strides in rural areas," said a state health official.

While the number of positive cases were in the range 2 to 10 every day, last month, as many as 29 fresh cases were reported on July 29, 46 on July 23 and 38 on July 22.

According to experts, the virus is a winter phenomenon in western countries. But in India, it could find the same favourable conditions during the monsoon. "The H1N1 group of viruses proliferate more when the weather is humid and slightly cooler. The virus is an airborne one and humidity and cool weather are conducive factors for its survival," said Arun Jamkar, dean of Sassoon general hospital.

The spread of the swine flu virus is thought to occur in the same way as that of seasonal flu virus. Influenza spreads from person to person by the respiratory route. If an infected person coughs, sneezes or even talks or sings loudly, s/he generates aerosols or droplets of saliva with virus particles in it, explained paediatrician Sharad Agarkkhedkar. "These particles get deposited in the respiratory tract of the people nearby, who, in turn, get infected. These particles also get deposited on inanimate objects (called fomites) like napkins, handkerchiefs, door knobs, etc. The virus can remain viable on such surfaces for a week or two. If a person touches these surfaces and then touches his/her nose, mouth or eyes, the virus can get transmitted," said microbiologist Siddharth Dalvi.

Four more H1N1 deaths in Pune
Posted: Mon Jul 26 2010, 03:31 hrs

As many as four H1N1 deaths over the weekend, all from outskirts such as Haveli, Shirur, Baramati and Ahmednagar, have taken the swine flu toll in the district to 62 since April. Doctors at the health department said the victims were given Tamiflu only on day four or five of fever, pointing at a delay in treatment. District health officials too are advocating early treatment to avoid fatalities.

On Sunday, 34-year-old Shehnaaz Rashid Shaikh from Ahmednagar succumbed to the H1N1 virus. She was suffering from fever, cough and sore throat and had blood pressure problems. She was ailing from July 18 but Tamiflu was administered only from July 23, after she was admitted to Sassoon General Hospital the previous day.

Jayashree Jadhav (33) of Baramati was ailing from fever, cough and similar symptoms from July 20. Also suffering from blood pressure problems, Jadhav was brought to Sassoon Hospital on July 23 and Tamiflu was started. She died on Sunday.

On Saturday, Manisha Yeshwant (25) of Shirur, who was in eight months pregnant, died due to complications. She was brought to Sassoon Hospital on July 22 though swine flu symptoms had showed up on July 14. Fifty-year-old Hausabai Borker succumbed to the virus at Y C M Hospital on Saturday.

A total of 273 deaths have been registered in the district since April 2009.
