Satara govt docs go on strike
Atul Deshpande, TNN 25 August 2009, 01:41am IST

PUNE: Medical care in Satara district was disrupted after 220 medical officers working at government hospitals went on an indefinite no work
strike' from Saturday, demanding a boost to their salary structures. Barring a swine flu screening and treatment centre, all other essential medical services at the Krantisinha Nana Patil government hospital in Satara came to a standstill on Monday.

When contacted, district collector Vikas Deshmukh said, "The district administration has requested the directorate of health services to immediately send a few doctors so that medical care can be extended to patients. Similarly, we have also requested Miraj Medical College, Karad Medical College and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to chip in their services during the period of strike. A three doctor team from the Medical College, Karad, reported to the Krantisinha Nana Patil government hospital on Monday."

Speaking on the number of H1N1 flu patients, Deshmukh said, "Four patients had been admitted to the quarantine ward of the Krantisinha Nana Patil government hospital. Three have been discharged after their throat swab reports declared them negative. One tested positive for H1N1 flu is under observation. He will be discharged on Tuesday." Some 32 cases of swine flu have reported in Satara and all of them have recovered after treatment, he added.

"It is the duty of the civil surgeon to take care of medical services and make alternative arrangements during a period of strike. But I am doing it in his place," said Deshmukh.

District president of the doctors' federation, Dr Sudhir Bakshi, said that around 220 doctors from the district hospital and primary health centre (PHC) participated in the strike.
