Cholera, gastro, diarrhoea, typhoid claimed 244 lives between 2007 and 2010

PUNE: As many as 244 people died from diseases such as cholera, gastroenteritis, diarrhoea, viral hepatitis and typhoid fever in the state between 2007 and 2010. The main reason for this spread of waterborne diseases is that a significant amount of water sources in rural parts are sullied, polluted and unfit for drinking. Deaths due to waterborne illnesses is a serious public health issue, as such deaths are absolutely preventable if adequate measures are taken to provide safe drinking water to all.
Sadly, the report of the state government itself admits that there has been little success in reining-in attacks of waterborne infections and resulting deaths in the last few years.
