Puerto Rico reports its first death from dengue in 2023

San Juan (EFE) – The Puerto Rico Department of Health reported this Saturday the first death from dengue on the island of the year.
This is a 64-year-old woman from the Bayamón region, as detailed in the agency's Aboviral Diseases Report, which compiles weekly information on cases of dengue, chikungunya and Zika, as well as cases accumulated in the calendar year.
According to that report, the victim died last October.
She also contracted the virus, according to a positive serological test for dengue IgM antibodies.
The report, however, adds a second death.
This is a 96-year-old woman, but whose death is suspicious, since she had not tested positive in the serological test.
In general, in Puerto Rico, a total of 1,083 cases have been reported from the first week to the 49th.
Of these, 601 cases (55.49%) belong to the group of men.
The age groups with the highest number of cases are those between 40 and 59 years old with 208 cases (19.21%), followed by the age group between 15 and 19 years old with 161 cases (14.87%) and the group between 10 and 14 years old. with 144 cases (13.30%).
During the first 49 weeks of the year, a total of 447 (41.27%) hospitalized cases have been reported.
Of the total cases with a positive laboratory test for dengue, 48 (4.43%) cases meet the 2009 WHO definition of a severe or severe case.
The municipality with the highest number of accumulated cases is San Juan with 187 cases (17.27%) reported, followed by Bayamón with 108 (9.97%) and Rincón with 93 cases (8.59%).
The health region with the highest number of reported cases is San Juan with 280 cases (25.90%), followed by Mayagüez with 181 cases (16.74%) and Bayamón with 176 cases (16.28%).
Dengue is a disease that affects people of all ages, with symptoms that vary from a mild fever to a disabling fever, accompanied by severe headache, pain behind the eyes, pain in muscles and joints, and erythema.
