PSU student treated for probable meningitis

UNIVERSITY PARK ? The condition of a Penn State student hospitalized at Mount Nittany Medical Center with a probable case of meningococcal meningitis is improving, a university spokeswoman said Sunday evening.
The student, who was diagnosed Friday, is a resident of the Pinchot Hall residence hall on campus. University officials said Sunday that all of the students who may have had contact with the infected student were evaluated at University Health Services.
Meningococcal meningitis is a form of bacterial meningitis and it is treated with antibiotics. Early symptoms of the disease can resemble those of the flu.
Students can get the meningococcal vaccine at University Health Services by scheduling an appointment online at www.sa.psu.edu/uhs or by calling 863-0774.
