West Nile virus has been in the US since 1999. A few cases in the summer in Long Island, New York is not that surprising. And the line that West Nile virus is worse than bird and (or?) swine flu? And speculation about a new strain of the virus? Very odd.

The world remembered the old and little-known disease - West Nile fever
-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------

In the U.S. and Europe talking about the threat of new epidemics, which may become more fearful and more real than avian and swine influenza. In American and European cities recorded cases are very rare diseases, which sometimes leads to death. This is the so-called West Nile fever.

Doctors have sounded the alarm last month. July 5 in New York was recorded case of hospitalization with this terrible diagnosis. Fever ill 66-year-old woman from Long Island. Physicians for a long time could not determine the cause of the disease, but eventually the disease was diagnosed. And later this month in the USA with West Nile fever hospitalized 61-year-old man and two women (74 and 46 years). The most mysterious - how the disease was in the U.S..

Vectors of West Nile are mostly mosquitoes and ticks. For the first time in America recorded cases of this disease in 1999. In 2002 in Pennsylvania broke even a real epidemic: 25 people died. However, it was said epidemiologists, vectors of this disease in the U.S. anymore. And the mosquitoes with West Nile virus detected immediately in several counties of New York and Pennsylvania. In the past month in the American press had hinted that the disease could get to America from Greece: that it brought brought out the birds, or more precisely - bird parasites, which are not noticed during quarantine. But in the Mediterranean outbreaks of West Nile fever sometimes occur.

Initially, epidemiologists took up this version with some skepticism and, as it turned out we were wrong. Recently, in Greece just an outbreak of West Nile fever. According to the Athens News Agency, now in the country recorded 22 cases of infection by this dangerous virus.

The epicenter of spread of a mysterious disease became the city of Thessaloniki. There hospitalized seven people. Unfortunately, there is already a fatal case: a dead 76-year-old man. The peculiarity of the Greek outbreak of the disease in that it affects older people. Although always thought that from the West Nile fever usually affects people younger. Perhaps this is a new strain? Unfortunately, not bypassed by the West Nile fever and Russia. Last month, in the Volgograd region were recorded four cases of the disease (which, fortunately, none fatal). But, at least in our country cause the spread of this disease is clear. Summer in the Volga delta are concentrated migratory birds for nesting. They brought from Africa dangerous virus, together with the parasites. It is believed that the natural foci exist here since 1999.

According to doctors, the first symptoms of West Nile fever - a tormenting pain in the forehead, eye sockets, waist and neck, a sharp rise in temperature to 40 degrees. By the way, according to statistics, only 4% of cases of West Nile fever ended with fatalities.
