Prepping the chickens!

We decided to get some baby chicks this spring. If the bird flu hits the USA before this winter, we want to at least have fresh eggs while staying away from the stores during a "Quarantine".

Of course, the first thing we need to do is figure out how to protect them from having any contact with wild birds. It will not be difficult to keep outsiders from geting near them, because we are way out in the country.

After doing much research on various chicken tractor designs, and coop designs, we found a new product that is just the ticket! It is a snap to clean and disinfect, comes with a cover, and is cheaper than buying the materials and building our own coop.

Those of you who have a few chickens for fresh eggs, tilling the garden, compost, etc., might want to take a look at this link!

Now that little coop is thinking outside the box regarding HPAI.

Does it have screens to keep mosquitoes out for other emerging diseases?

Re: Prepping the chickens!

I'm missing something. How are you going to keep the birds off the wire enclosure, so they won't poop where they chickens peck?

.

Re: Prepping the chickens!

There are two covers one can buy. One is a shade cover, for the summer heat, and the other is a full cover which can be used to keep birds overhead from dropping poop into the run. The wire is very closely spaced, and it bends out at the bottom to make a predator proof run. Foxes, etc. can dig under to get at the birds.

Of course, if the bird flu hits here, I will not "tractor" them around the lawn, but will probably put a "hoop house" over them, for double protection.

The folks in England who have these are using shower curtains, but these "eglus" are approved for bird flu with the covers that come with them, from what I read on the UK website...

Re: Prepping the chickens!

If you are going to cover the run to keep out the droppings and NOT tractor it around the garden. Why don't you lock them in a hen house. I don't see the diffence. If you are not going to tractor them, then you lose any advantage of having that product.
