Memories of the Canterbury earthquake will be kept for future generations through a time capsule containing thousands of stories.

Project organiser Argene Montgomery-Honger said 830 letters, photographs and drawings had been gathered and would be sealed on September 4, to be reopened in 2060.

Thirty-seven springs were created around Christchurch by the earthquake,

City council water and waste manager Mark Christison said about two-thirds of the 37 springs had popped up in gardens. A few had appeared in sealed roads.

Mr Christison said it was difficult to state if all the new springs were from unconfined groundwater or whether some were from the water supply system aquifers.

The Star asked Mr Christison if there was any threat to the city's aquifers because of the quake or the after shocks.

"There is the potential for this, but no obvious quality issues have arisen to date," he said. "Council has compared water chemistry pre-quake/post-quake and again there are no obvious variations."

High School Exams

Almost all applications from Canterbury secondary school pupils for estimated grades after September's earthquake were approved last year.

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) rejected just 13 of the 3217 derived-grade applications submitted by 438 Canterbury pupils for National Certificate of Educational Achievement standards. Applications in the region were up 80 per cent on 2009 figures.

School information can be used to estimate grades where a pupil's performance has been disadvantaged through illness, misadventure or other circumstance

QUAKE: Changes Cantabrians have made to their lives since September 4.

Some sleep with the lights on, others make sure there is a clear path to the bedroom door and one has torches hanging from every doorknob in the house....

Many Cantabrians now had survival kits and stored food and water. Cars were parked outside garages with at least half a tank of petrol.

A lot of people slept with a torch on their bedside table, a charged cellphone handy, a radio at arm's reach and a pair of slip-on shoes at the side of the bed, he said.

Govt offers Christchurch quake victims a helping hand

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says $26 million has been set aside for the Accommodation Subsidy, and more money will be found if it?s needed.

The financial assistance available ranges from $180 per week for a single person with no dependents, to $330 for families with one or more children.

It?s available for homeowners whose temporary accommodation allowance under their own insurance has run out. It will last as long as they need it.

Work on Christchurch's underground riverside dams should begin "at the back end of winter", but the biggest issues will be finding enough qualified pipelayers and land-compacting rigs, the city's rebuilding chief says.

"There are not enough pipelayers in New Zealand to deal with it," Cameron said.

"We are training people now. That's a resource we need to put pressure on.

"The rigs, we are looking to Australia and Europe.

"There are nowhere near enough here in New Zealand."

The dams are a major part of land remediation work near the Avon River to quake-proof damaged ground before rebuilding can begin.

Cameron said the underground work would take about 18 months to complete, but it could be quicker if pipeline and rig capabilities were greater than expected.

Some quake-hit Cantabrians could have a cold winter as the Earthquake Commission battles to complete urgent chimney replacements.

The commission has set a May 1 deadline for installing heating appliances in the 9000 homes included in the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority's chimney-replacement scheme

"We've got 9000 heat pumps to put into Christchurch," he said. "I think the maximum that's ever been done in Christchurch in a whole year is 4000. We've got three months to do it and we've run out of resources."
