No confirmed injuries after 5.0 aftershock
2:13 PM Tuesday Oct 19, 2010

Civil Defence is monitoring the situation in Christchurch after a magnitude 5.0 aftershock hit the city this morning, damaging property but apparently causing no serious injuries.

Residents reported violent shaking lasting between 15 and 20 seconds during the quake, which Geonet said hit at 11.32am, 10km south-west of the city at a depth of 9km.

Civil Defence Communications Manager Vince Cholewa said the quake would have been felt on the ground as a magnitude 7 earthquake.

Geonet has received reports of heavy damage in Beckenham, Ilam and Spreydon, 23 reports rating the aftershock as damaging and a further 156 saying it was slightly damaging.

New Zealand's Christchurch hit by powerful tremor

The New Zealand city of Christchurch has been shaken by a strong earthquake, six weeks after a more powerful tremor caused extensive damage.

The 5.0-magnitude tremor cut power and telephone services, and some residents fled into the streets, reports said.

The earthquake hit at about 1130 local time (2230 GMT on Monday).

Christchurch, on South Island, is still recovering from the damage caused by a 7.1-magnitude quake on 4 September, although nobody was killed.

The quake on Tuesday struck around 10km (six miles) south-west of the city and its epicentre was 9km (five miles) below the ground, the country's geological agency GNS Science said.

The city has been shaken by many aftershocks since last month's earthquake destroyed buildings and roads.

Some of Christchurch's most historic buildings were damaged beyond repair.

Second strong earthquake shakes Christchurch

A strong earthquake has rattled the New Zealand city of Christchurch, causing panic among residents.

By Paul Chapman in Wellington
Published: 7:00AM BST 19 Oct 2010

The 5.0 magnitude shake was the most powerful the city has felt since the 7.0 quake on September 4 that wrecked thousands of buildings and tore rifts through farmland and roads.

The shallow quake was among almost 2,000 aftershocks that have frazzled nerves in the South Island's biggest city, but geologists said the effect was magnified because it was centred only six miles to the southwest of Christchurch.

Sara Page, a geologist with the government-run Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences, said: "That would be the biggest, closest one we've had for a while."

Panicked workers in the city centre and some residents fled from buildings and gathered in open spaces, and a shopping mall in the suburb of Riccarton was evacuated as a precaution.

Fiona Fidow, who has a shop in the mall, said: "Quite a few people are crying and hysterical. There are a lot of frightened people."

article: Oct 19 2010 - Strong aftershock close to Christchurch

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake rocked Canterbury at 11:32 am today.

mag_5.jpg

Epicentres of magnitude 5 (and above) earthquakes since 4 September.

A further aftershock of the 4 September magnitude 7.1 Darfield earthquake occurred 10 km south-west of Christchurch city centre at a depth of 9 km.

There have been reports of power outages and further damage to buildings. This earthquake will have felt particularly strong to the residents of Christchurch, comparable to the magnitude 5.1 aftershock on 8 September, due to their close proximity to the city. As seen on the accompanying map, those two earthquakes have been the closest to the city, with the rest at varying distances to the west. How big the earthquake feels to people is dependent on how close they are to it. That is why the Modified Mercalli intensity scale is a better way of comparing shakes, as it grades the impact upon people and the environment.

The top 5 shakes as recorded at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens (CBGS) seismograph, close to the city centre, are:
<TABLE cellSpacing=10><TBODY><TR><TH>Date</TH><TH>Magnitude</TH><TH>Peak Ground Acceleration</TH></TR><TR align=middle><TD>4 Sep 2010 4:35 am</TD><TD>7.1</TD><TD>18.124 %g</TD></TR><TR align=middle><TD>8 Sep 2010 7:49 am</TD><TD>5.1</TD><TD>15.685 %g</TD></TR><TR align=middle><TD>19 Oct 2010 11:32 am</TD><TD>5.0</TD><TD>7.229 %g</TD></TR><TR align=middle><TD>4 Sep 2010 7:56 am</TD><TD>5.2</TD><TD>2.741 %g</TD></TR><TR align=middle><TD>8 Sep 2010 8:15 am</TD><TD>3.8</TD><TD>2.703 %g</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

The occurrence of this earthquake falls within the expected number and size of aftershocks for this month: between 0 and 5 magnitude 5.0 or greater quakes could be expected...

LATEST: A fresh aftershock has hit Canterbury this morning, registering 4.5 on the Richter scale.

The quake was measured as occuring at 9.17am, 30km west of Diamond Harbour, at a depth of 15km.

It followed violent ground shaking in western Christchurch during yesterday's big aftershock, which scientists say was on a par with that of the September 4 earthquake.

Ground accelerations, measured as gravitational-forces or "g-forces'', reached 30 per cent of the strength of gravity in Riccarton and surrounds in the 11.32am shake that scared many Christchurch residents, cut power and caused some damage.

Domestic violence up following quake
... Advocate Lyn Boyd said the calls were more frequent and more worrying.

"What we're seeing is an increase - an increase in severity as well as an increase in numbers, and I think that it's not going to stop."

Rosalind Houghton, who did her PhD on the relationship between domestic violence and natural disasters, said domestic violence cases definitely increase in the months after such an event.

Her study showed the increase could be three-fold, which means the peak could still be on its way in Canterbury.

"I would expect the agencies will continue dealing with domestic violence cases that are related to the earthquake ... for probably two years," Houghton said....

Christchurch has been rocked by another major aftershock measuring 4.8 this afternoon, but residents say it felt much larger.

The magnitude 4.8 quake hit the region at 3.13pm at a depth of 9km, 10km north-east of Christchurch, reported GNS Science.

After the shock, the Orion website was reporting power out at its Brighton substation. Power was estimated to come back on at about 4.20pm.

No greater stress on major fault
PAUL GORMAN - The Press
Last updated 05:00 30/10/2010

The Canterbury earthquake does not appear to have increased the chances of the Alpine Fault rupturing, a seismologist says.

Calculations by GNS Science seismologist Bill Fry show the amount of stress in the ground west of the Canterbury foothills is unlikely to have risen as a result of the magnitude-7.1 tremor on September 4.

Ground stress has decreased across parts of the Canterbury Plains towards Rakaia and north of the Waimakariri River.

However, the figures show stress has increased on the Porters Pass Fault and the eastern end of the new Greendale Fault.

Underground Stone Dam proposed for quake protection

Canterbury's worst-hit suburbs could soon be surrounded by giant underground stone columns to protect them from further earthquake damage.

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee said today massive stone columns between 10-20 metre wide and 5-10m deep could be placed into the ground around the eight worst-affected suburbs to lessen the effects of lateral spreading following another earthquake.

Monster mozzies disrupting life at Pines Beach
Wed, 03 Nov 2010 6:22p.m.

By Jessica Rowe

While Cantabrians struggle to rebuild their quake-damaged houses, one of the worst affected areas ? Pines Beach is faced with another problem: mosquitoes.

Most of the residents of the small township just north of Christchurch are blaming the earthquake for the mozzie outbreak.

Stagnant water lies everywhere, forced up by liquefaction, and staying there because of a raised water table. And then there is all the stinking, fetid puddles and pools in abandoned houses and sections all providing the perfect habitat for mosquitoes.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has assured residents the mozzies aren't spreading disease, and say their earthquake theory stacks up.

?With some of the silt blocking the drains it's meant that the water has stayed there rather than pulling away, so they've hatched a lot more than they normally would and that is what the residents have noticed,? says Regan Courtney.

Earthquakes Dog Clinton On Overseas Trips

by The Associated Press

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand November 5, 2010, 05:14 pm ET

What is it about Hillary Rodham Clinton and earthquakes? Seems the secretary of state rarely takes an overseas trip that is not in some way affected by a temblor.

Clinton and her staff were jolted from sleep in their hotel rooms in New Zealand early Saturday by a strong aftershock from a 7-magnitude quake that struck in September. It was the second aftershock since she arrived here Friday....

Scientists identify pesky mosquitoes
CULLEN SMITH | 11th November 2010

MAF Biosecurity says it is a bigger, more aggressive version of the common New Zealand winter mosquito.

The mosquito is not known to spread disease, but it is in greater numbers this season because of ideal breeding conditions and plenty of organic matter for larvae to feed on in large amounts of surface water pooling after the quake

No more sewage into quake-hit rivers
By Paul Harper
7:52 AM Friday Nov 12, 2010

Sewage is no longer being discharged into Christchurch City and Waimakariri district rivers infrastructure damaged in the September 4 Canterbury earthquake is repaired.

Christchurch City Council water and waste manager Mark Christison said contractors had made repairs and cleared blockages which were causing discharges into the Avon and Styx rivers.

"We are pleased the work has been done so quickly - it is only two months since the earthquake and we have been able to make repairs much faster than we originally thought," Mr Christison said.

"After the earthquake there were around 2700 homes without a sewage service. At the beginning of this week, there were fewer than 70 and within the next two weeks, we hope to have every home in the city with a sewer service."

Public lecture: The Magnitude 7.1 Darfield (Canterbury) Earthquake and the implications of living on an active plate boundary

22 November 2010 6pm

Venue: Fisher & Paykel Appliances Auditorium, Owen G Glenn Building, The University of Auckland, 12 Grafton Road, Auckland

Professor Jarg Pettinga is the Head of the Department of Geological Sciences, University of Canterbury. He is an engineering and structural geologist, and specialises in active tectonics of the Canterbury Region. He established and has led the Canterbury Active Tectonics and Earthquake Hazards Research Group for the past two decades and has built up a vast knowledge of earthquake-related hazards.

In this presentation Professor Pettinga will describe the 4th September 2010 Darfield (Canterbury) Earthquake, it effects on the city of Christchurch and surrounding region. Professor Pettinga will discuss that while the earthquake occurred on a previously unknown fault, when considered in a regional context with respect to the overall plate tectonic setting it was no surprise. He will also describe what other earthquake-related hazards lay ahead for Canterbury and beyond.

This free public lecture is part of the GeoNZ 2010 Conference at The University of Auckland from 21-24 November. For more information about the conference visit www.geonz2010.co.nz

Groundwater levels as far away as Northland plunged after being shaken by the Canterbury earthquake.

Scientists studying the effects of the magnitude 7.1 quake on September 4 are unsure yet exactly how it affected the quality and quantity of Canterbury's groundwater.

But measurements show that in the 24 hours after the big shake and beyond, water levels fluctuated markedly throughout the country.

In Canterbury, groundwater levels fell up to 1.2 metres in some places and rose 6m in others, changes which seem to have been sustained since.
