Hurricane Igor appears destined to become a large and powerful major hurricane over the Central Atlantic in the days to come. Wind shear is low, 5 - 10 knots, and is expected to drop below 5 knots for the next five days. Waters are warm, 28?C, and will warm to 29?C by Wednesday. Igor has moistened its environment enough to keep the dry air of the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) at bay. Igor is undergoing a period of rapid intensification today, and will probably be a Category 3 or 4 hurricane by Monday.

The track forecast for Igor remains unchanged. Igor will move west under the influence of a strong ridge of high pressure for the next 2 - 3 days, then turn more to the west-northwest then northwest in response to the steering influence of a broad trough of low pressure moving across the Western Atlantic on Tuesday and Wednesday. This should allow Igor to pass several hundred miles to the northeast of the Lesser Antilles. In the longer range, Igor may be a threat to Bermuda, and does have a small chance of making landfall on the U.S. East Coast or Canada. Climatology shows that about 15% of all tropical cyclones that have existed at Igor's current position have gone on to hit the U.S. East Coast; these odds are about 10% for Bermuda and 10% for Canada. The forecast steering pattern for the period 5 - 12 days from now from the ECMWF and GFS models shows a continuation of the pattern we've seen all hurricane season, with regular strong troughs of low pressure moving off the U.S. East Coast. This pattern favors Igor eventually recurving out to sea without affecting any land areas. Recent runs of the ECMWF model indicate that these troughs may not be as intense as previously thought, so it is possible Igor has a higher chance than usual to hit land than climatology suggests. One wild card may be the possible development of TD 12 behind Igor. If TD 12 develops into a hurricane, and moves close to Igor, as some of the models are suggesting, the two hurricanes could rotate around a common center, forcing Igor more towards the coast of the U.S. The long term fate of Igor is difficult to predict at this point.

Cameras mounted on the International Space Station captured new views of Hurricane Igor heading westward over the Atlantic Ocean the morning of Sept. 13. Igor was at Category 4 strength with maximum sustained winds near 150 mph.

Track forecast for Igor

The track forecast for Igor remains unchanged. Igor has made its long-anticipated turn to the west-northwest, in response to the steering influence of a broad trough of low pressure moving across the Western Atlantic. This trough will steer Igor several hundred miles to the northeast of the Lesser Antilles, and high waves should be the only impact of Igor on the islands. In the longer range, Igor appears likely to be a threat to Bermuda, and that island can expect tropical storm force winds as early as Friday. Igor does have a small chance of making landfall on the U.S. East Coast or Canada. Climatology shows that about 20% of all tropical cyclones that have existed at Igor's current position have gone on to hit the U.S. East Coast; these odds are about 5 - 10% for Bermuda and 15% for Canada. The forecast steering current pattern for the period 5 - 10 days from now from the ECMWF and GFS models shows several modest troughs of low pressure moving across the Western Atlantic. These troughs will probably be strong enough to recurve Igor out sea. However, 5 - 10 day forecasts are prone to large errors, and it is too early to be highly confident that Igor will miss hitting the U.S. or Canadian coasts.

... Exact impacts of Hurricane Igor at the end of the week are still difficult
to gauge. However, there is moderate confidence in rough southeast
swell developing ahead of the hurricane, as well as strengthening
winds. By Friday, there is quite a difference in exact position
of Igor depending on which model is followed (GFS/UK/EC/GEM).

However, the GFS appears to be rather faster than the other models with its approach of Igor towards our area. Also, historically the slower
UK solution has been initialising much better with reality. Therefore,
this slower onset of strengthening winds is being followed for the
moment (and this is in agreement with NHC guidance also). Much more
detail on Igor will be covered in the next few days, as it likely
becomes a potential threat to the Island. Please see latest Tropical
Update Bulletins for latest updates on Hurricane Igor.

TROPICALS

Much has been said about Hurricane Igor, which on its current track,
is likely be become a potential threat to the Island in the next
day or so, with wind/weather/swell impacts towards and over the coming
weekend. The severity of these impacts is still difficult to forecast
at the 4-5 day time range. However, firmer details are likely over
the next few days as confidence in track and intensity increases.

SHORT TERM FORECAST
The ridge of high pressure to our southeast should provide mainly
fine weather for Thursday and Friday morning. Increasing cloud cover
Friday will become overcast as the outer bands of Igor approach.
Moderate to strong northeast winds on Thursday will veer east-northeast
by Thursday evening, increasing to strong by Friday afternoon. A
Small Craft Warning has been issued valid from Thursday morning through
Friday night as seas will be increasing 5-9ft Thursday due to building
southeasterly swells from Igor, and winds increasing moderate to
strong by the afternoon. Seas will continue to rise 12-18ft due
to building southeasterly swells in advance of Igor.


LONG TERM FORECAST
Saturday will be overcast with periods of heavy rain or showers
and a risk of thunder as the outer bands of Igor cross the region.
Winds will remain east-northeasterly increasing from strong in the
morning to Tropical Storm force by late afternoon or early evening,
then continue to increase to Storm force by Sunday morning. As of
the 12pm Forecast Advisory on Igor, it appears the hurricane will
pass near to our east early Sunday evening, bringing hurricane force
winds for a time Sunday afternoon/evening. As the system then moves
to our northeast, winds will shift quickly west to northwest and
ease to Tropical Storm Force overnight Sunday night. A Hurricane
Warning will likely be required for Sunday.
