Weekly information on Human Infection by Monkeypox Virus – Nº 005
Information on the number of cases in Portugal until August 3, 2022
On May 3, the presence of the Monkeypox virus (VMPX) was detected in Portugal, with laboratory confirmation of five cases of human infection by VMPX. Since then, through August 3, 2022, 710 confirmed cases have been identified.
As of August 3, 2022, 616 cases were reported on SINAVEmed (Figure 1). Of the 616 cases, most belong to the age group between 30 and 39 years (262; 43%). Most cases are male (534; 99.6%), with 4 cases (0.6%) reported female.
Actions at national level
On July 16, vaccination of the first contacts close to cases began, according to the eligibility criteria of Norm 006/2022 of 07/12/2022. Up to 1 August, 73 contacts had been vaccinated, out of the 104 considered eligible (70.2%). Eligible contacts in the different regions continue to be identified and targeted for vaccination.
The DGS is attentive to the epidemiological situation, both nationally and internationally, monitoring and adapting, when necessary, the implementation of public health measures, namely with regard to vaccination.
