A case of bird flu has been detected in a domestic chicken coop in Palmela.

Authorities have ‘actioned methods of control’ (meaning the other birds in the coop will have been destroyed, and domestic animals in surrounding areas checked).

Reports stress there is no evidence that this flu can be transmitted to humans through consumption of eggs or meat.

There are also no large-scale industrial establishments producing poultry in the area.

A statement by the DGAV (general directorate of foodstuff and veterinary medicine) explains the strain of H5N1 virus identified is “highly pathogenic” and will have arrived in Portugal as a result of regular migration of wild birds from Asia and/ or Russia...

It is a backyard holding with multiple bird species. The probable source is the contact with wild birds, because no other epidemiological links were found. The holdings in the protection and surveillance zone were visited and there was no clinical signs and/or mortality. All those holdings are backyard (non-poultry).

Portugal registers new case of bird flu in Constância

The Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Medicine (DGAV) confirmed this Friday a focus of infection with avian influenza virus in a facility that holds collection birds in Constância, in the district of Santarém.

In a statement, DGAV said that the case was detected in domestic animals in the parish of Santa Margarida da Coutada, which is part of the surveillance zone of the primary focus detected in December in Vila Nova da Barquinha, a municipality adjacent to Constância.

The Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary also indicated that "the outbreak control measures are already being implemented in accordance with the legislation in force"...

...On December 31, an outbreak had been confirmed in a turkey farm, in Praia do Ribatejo, Vila Nova da Barquinha, and today's confirmation of dead birds in Constância and the existence of new cases of avian influenza of the H5N1 subtype of high pathogenicity in mute ducks, found dead in the riverside park of Vila Nova da Barquinha on January 11, do not constitute new outbreaks of the disease, being, rather, linked to the already existing outbreak.

"The latest cases detected in Vila Nova da Barquinha and now in Constância do not constitute new outbreaks since they are already included in the demarcated surveillance zone when the primary outbreak was detected" in December in Praia do Ribatejo , Susana Pombo, from DGAV told Lusa. .

According to the official, Portugal currently has five active outbreaks of bird flu infection, with restriction measures having been lifted in Palmela , in the municipality of Setúbal, after, in early December, an outbreak of bird flu was detected in a exploration in that locality and 30 days have passed without any new situations being recorded.

The first two outbreaks were detected on December 1st, in a domestic poultry farm in Palmela , and, on December 23rd, on a turkey farm in Óbidos , with around 18,000 birds, there being "a link" between this farm and the third outbreak. , confirmed on December 31, in Vila Nova da Barquinha, on a farm with around six thousand turkeys.

On January 4, a fourth outbreak of avian influenza was detected in a chicken and duck farm in Santiago do Cacém , in the district of Setúbal, and on the following day a fifth outbreak was confirmed in Alpiarça , in a wild goose, which was added to the on 11 January a sixth outbreak, in Peniche , detected in a seagull.

In view of the "current epidemiological situation", DGAV argues that it is important to "comply and reinforce" biosecurity rules, as well as good poultry production practices, avoiding contacts between domestic and wild birds...

Third outbreak of bird flu blights Torres Vedras

A third outbreak of bird flu – this time in a commercial exploration of ducks – has been flagged in the A dos Cunhados e Macieria parish of Torres Vedras (near Lisbon). As with the other two outbreaks this month among chicken farms, measures of control involve culling all the infected birds (no indication has been given at to numbers involved), checking on methods of hygiene at the premises, and informing other bird-rearing businesses in the area. Compensation is available for the loss of infected birds – 75% co-financed by the European Community.

Portugal now has 15 outbreaks of bird flu detected, after another one was confirmed in A-dos-Cunhados and Macieira, Torres Vedras, the fourth case in this parish since the beginning of the month, announced the DGAV.

“In Portugal, the first outbreak was detected on November 30, 2021 in a domestic capoeira in the municipality of Palmela. Since then, 15 outbreaks of HPAI [high pathogenic avian influenza] of the H5N1 subtype have already been confirmed in our country”, reads the latest public notice issued by the Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Medicine (DGAV).

Of the total, 11 outbreaks concern domestic birds, including commercial farms for turkeys, chickens, ducks and a private collection of domestic poultry and the remaining four outbreaks cover wild birds.

So far, bird flu has been detected in the districts of Leiria, Lisbon, Santarém, Setúbal and Beja.

The latest outbreak was confirmed on Saturday, in a breeding and rearing farm for breeding ducks in the parish of A-dos-Cunhados and Macieira, in the municipality of Torres Vedras....

“On March 15 [Tuesday] a new outbreak of infection with avian influenza (AG) virus was confirmed in a home farm, in the parish of Azinhal, municipality of Castro Marim, district of Faro”, reads a note released by DGAV.

This brings the number of confirmed outbreaks in Portugal to 20 and at least close to 230,000 animals have already been slaughtered due to this...
