Port Orange school absenteeism at 10 percent due to swine flu fears

PORT ORANGE ? Parents of children attending Horizon Elementary School were warned today of higher than normal absenteeism at the school, some of it due to flu-like symptoms.
Ten percent of the school?s 657 students were absent Monday, compared to a normal rate of 6 percent. Also, 11 of 21 children in one kindergarten class and eight of 19 students in a third-grade class were absent, some with flu-like symptoms.
School and Health Department officials are monitoring absence rates carefully to see how the H1N1 swine flu, which is present in Volusia County, is affecting school children.
The death of a 15-year-old New Smyrna Beach High School student earlier this month was found to be related to swine flu although he was at higher risk for complications because of lifelong medical conditions.
Parents are being encouraged to keep sick children home from school until they are symptom free for at least 24 hours.
