Scientists from the Medical University of Gdańsk and the University of Gdańsk, together with veterinarians, have detected the first case of SARS-CoV-2 infection in farmed mink in Poland.

Dr. Maciej Grzybek from the Department of Tropical Parasitology of the Medical University of Gdańsk and Dr. Łukasz Rąbalski from the Department of Recombinant Vaccines at the University of Gdańsk, in cooperation with veterinarians, examined 91 farmed mink for the presence of coronaviruses. Scientists confirmed infection with coronavirus in 8 individuals.

This is the first case of confirmed infection of farm animals with coronavirus in Poland. Throat swabs were collected from mink from a breeding farm in the Pomeranian Voivodeship. The material was subjected to RT-PCR using a two-gene test based on the protocol used in human diagnostics. The presence of SARS-CoV-2 virus RNA was found in eight of the animals tested. In-depth genetic research is currently underway to determine the probable origin of the virus and enable comparison with the known genetic sequences of SARS-CoV-2.

Poland finds eight coronavirus cases among farmed minks

WARSAW (Reuters) - Polish scientists have identified eight cases of COVID-19 in minks at a farm in the north of the country, the Medical University of Gdansk said on Tuesday.

No coronavirus cases among mink have been discovered in Poland previously. The Chief Veterinary Inspectorate was not immediately available to comment.

Scientists from the Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine of the Medical University of Gdańsk and the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Gdańsk and the MUG, together with veterinarians, have detected the first case of SARS-CoV-2 infection in breeding mink in Poland ( Neovision vision ) in Poland. Dr. Maciej Grzybek from the Department of Tropical Parasitology of the MUG and Dr. Łukasz Rąbalski from the Department of Recombinant Vaccines of the University of Gdańsk, in cooperation with veterinarians, examined 91 farmed mink for the presence of coronaviruses. The obtained results indicate the possibility of transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus from humans to minks. The possibility of infection of many animal species such as mink, hamster, rabbit, bats, macaque and rodent has been experimentally confirmed in laboratory studies conducted in various research centers in Europe and around the world. Research conducted by scientists from Tri-City confirms the need for increased epizootiological monitoring, intensive research in the search for possible carriers of zoonotic diseases and raising the standards of biosecurity on farm animal farms.

Coronavirus in mink in Pomerania. No decision on knocking out

There is no decision on mink from a farm in Pomerania infected with coronavirus. ​

According to the RMF FM reporter, the tests that confirmed the infection in several animals were not carried out at the request of the veterinary inspection. So they have to be repeated.

At the moment, there is no decision about killing mink. There is not even a conversation about it.- says RMF FM Agnieszka Arendt from the Pomeranian Voivodeship Veterinary Officer.​

Scientists of the Medical University of Gdańsk and the University of Gdańsk confirmed yesterday that they were infected with SARS-CoV-2 in eight out of more than ninety mink examined. Previously, similar studies were carried out in Denmark. There, a decision was made to kill several million mink.

According to the RMF FM reporter Kuba Kaługa, these tests were not carried out at the request of the veterinary inspection. You have to repeat them.
Research has already been commissioned. They are to be performed by the State Veterinary Institute in Puławy. The results should be back this week. And what happens next will depend on them.

There are a total of 18 mink farms in Pomerania, and they will also be inspected. On the farm where mink are infected, disinfection recommendations have been issued and the employees are handled by the Sanitary Inspectorate.

Minister of Agriculture: "no coronavirus has been detected in Polish mink"

The media reports about the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak in mink have not been confirmed, Minister of Agriculture Grzegorz Puda informed at a press conference on Thursday. Research on mink exclusion of coronavirus on the farm was carried out by the Veterinary Institute in Puławy.

The research was commissioned by the minister following information from the Medical University of Gdańsk. According to scientists and veterinarians cooperating with them, the mink breeding on the farm in the province was infected with the coronavirus. Pomeranian.

As the minister of agriculture said on Thursday, only the results carried out by official laboratories and by the reference laboratory of the Veterinary Institute in Puławy are recognized.

Minks in Danger

In connection with the information on the coronavirus in mink at the Inspection, the GLW appealed to all interested parties to report unusual symptoms of the disease in mink (e.g. dyspnea) in May this year, but also asked the Chief Sanitary Inspector to inform about coronavirus cases among employees and owners of fur farms. As emphasized by Bogdan Konopka, there were 13 cases of coronavirus in people associated with fur farms (out of 840 farms), but it was not associated with the virus in mink. ​

280 objects were inspected (there are 340 American mink farms in Poland, and there are 840 fur farms in all) and swabs from 17 mink farms (in 4 provinces) were collected for examination, 800 samples were tested and no animal cases were found, i.e. the results positive. However, Krzysztof Niemczuk emphasizes that the Polish authorities are ready for the eventuality that the virus will appear on the farm, and Minister Puda does not rule out killing the entire mink herd in this situation. Currently, animal observation and virus monitoring are ongoing. ​

A mink smear was also taken from a farm where the Medical University of Gdańsk allegedly detected coronavirus in mink, PIW-PIB from Puławy did not confirm these results, as the results obtained were negative. ​
