On Wednesday, December 7, 2022, the Chief Veterinary Officer announced that a new outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was confirmed in the village of Fałkowice in the Opolskie Voivodeship (commune of Pokoje, Namysłów poviat). This time, the H5N1 virus attacked a large farm where almost 220,000 animals were kept. laying hens. About 3,000 of the hens died of disease, and the rest of the flock will be culled and disposed of as part of the fight against avian influenza.

This is the 36th outbreak of avian influenza in poultry in Poland this year. The previous outbreak of avian influenza in Poland in a farm keeping poultry was detected on September 21 in the district of Łęczyca. An outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza was found in the Opolskie Voivodeship. For this reason, almost 300,000 hens were liquidated. Towns from three poviats were included in the area considered at risk of the disease.

The first mass deaths of birds occurred on December 6 at a laying hen farm in Fałkowice (the commune of Pokoje, Namysłów poviat).

- At that time, samples were taken for testing and on December 7, after obtaining the results, the Poviat Veterinary Officer in Namysłów recognized the farm as a center of highly pathogenic avian influenza disease - informs Agnieszka Kobierska, deputy Opolskie Voivodship Veterinary Officer.

In the case of highly pathogenic avian influenza, the entire population of birds susceptible to the disease must be eradicated in the outbreak. In accordance with the Animal Protection Act, 219,372 hens on the laying hen farm and 63,200 hens in the laying hen rearing facility located 400 meters from the bonfire were liquidated at the site of the outbreak....

In recent days, the Veterinary Inspection has confirmed 5 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Poland. In total, all 37 in 2023 contained 690,719 pieces of poultry. There were also 13 outbreaks of HPAI in wild birds as of January 20.

HPAI outbreaks in the period from January 22 to 25 broke out on commercial farms in the province of Greater Poland and homesteads in the province. Opole. All were caused by a subtype of the H5N1 virus.

HPAI in 83,600 poultry

The HPAI No. 33 outbreak was found on January 22 in a commercial farm keeping 11,918 ducks for fattening in Wielkopolska, Turek poviat, Dobra commune, Szymany.

The HPAI No. 34 outbreak was found on January 22 at a commercial farm keeping 62,524 turkeys for fattening in Wielkopolska, Kalisz district, Koźminek commune, Józefina.

H5N1 virus in wild birds

Veterinary services have confirmed 13 outbreaks of HPAI in wild birds since January 3.

Avian influenza virus has been detected in a total of 23 birds. These are mute swans, herring gulls and bean geese.

HPAI outbreaks in wild birds have so far been confirmed in:

In 2022, 40 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) were found in Poland in 59 wild birds and 1 in 92 animals kept in captivity.

The Veterinary Inspection in each outbreak confirmed the H5N1 virus. The services implemented all disease control measures in connection with the finding of an outbreak of HPAI No. 2022/35 on the farm, in accordance with the procedures resulting from the provisions of national law and Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/687.

In recent days, the Veterinary Inspection has confirmed 4 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Poland. In total, all 41 in 2023 contained 761,985 poultry.

HPAI outbreaks in the period from January 27 to February 5 broke out on commercial farms in the province of Greater Poland, Warmian-Masurian and Lubuskie. All were caused by the H5N1 virus subtype.

HPAI in 71,266 poultry

The outbreak of HPAI No. 38 was found on January 27 in a commercial farm keeping 9,210 ducks for fattening in Wielkopolska, Kalisz poviat in the Opatówek commune in the village of Janików.

The HPAI No. 39 outbreak was found on January 27 in a commercial farm keeping 15,849 turkeys for fattening in Wielkopolska, Kalisz poviat in the Opatówek commune in Dębe Kolonia.

The HPAI No. 40 outbreak was found on February 4 in a commercial farm keeping 18,823 breeding ducks in the province of Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in the Nowe Miasto district in the Nowe Miasto Lubawskie commune in the town of Gwiździny .
