CAMPBELL COUNTY (WSLS 10) ? A local school nurse contacted the health department about an unusual number of children out with pneumonia. That is enough for the Health Department to start investigating. The Central Virginia Health District says they have 15 cases identified and are investigating what is causing the outbreak.

This time of year, influenza can cause pneumonia but Epidemiologist Haley Evans says these cases aren?t linked to the flu.

?There are multiple causes of pneumonia ? bacterial or viral pneumonia ? but we have not been able to narrow it down,? said Evans...

Additional cases of pneumonia now have been identified in Lynchburg following the initial 15 cases found at Timberlake-area schools in the past two weeks.

On Wednesday, parents of Timberlake-area students were informed via a letter of the original 15 cases of pneumonia. They initially were caught by a school nurse and confirmed in students, staff and bus drivers by the local Department of Health.

On Thursday, Haley Evans, an epidemiologist with the Virginia Department of Health Central Virginia District, confirmed additional cases now have been identified, and this does constitute an outbreak. She would not identify where the cases are occurring...

Pneumonia outbreak grows in Lynchburg area

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) State health officials say an outbreak of pneumonia cases continues to grow in the Lynchburg area.

A school nurse noticed a large number of students were coming down with pneumonia last month and alerted the Central Virginia Health District, according to district epidemiologist Haley Evans.

Evans told WDBJ7 that an investigation was launched, which included interviews with individuals who were diagnosed with pneumonia. The health department is working with physicians in the area to collect specimen from infected individuals, which will be sent to a state lab to help determine what's causing the pneumonia cases...
