PMC-run hosps to get ICU wards, ventilators for H1N1 patients

PUNE: The PMC-run hospitals in the city will soon have ventilators and isolation ICU wards to treat H1N1 patients in critical condition, district guardian ministerAjit Pawar said on Friday. He said that the decision was taken considering the increased number of critical patients of H1N1 influenza in the city.

Pawar, however, said the decision on mass vaccination will be taken as per the Union government's guidelines in this regard. Pawar added that there was no scarcity of Tamiflu tablets in the district.

Pawar was addressing a press conference after the District Planning and Development Council (DPDC) meeting. MLAs and MLCs from the city and district were present at the meeting.

During the meeting city MLAs have agreed to provide funds to purchase additional ventilators for treatment of swine flu patients in PMC-run hospitals, Pawar said.

He said, "The number of swine flu positive cases and deaths have gone up in the city and rural areas. At present, most of the critical swine flu patients are being moved to the Sassoon general hospital. There are constraints even at the Sassoon hospital to handle the critical cases. Also, a lot of time is consumed in moving a critical patient to Sassoon. Consequently, we have decided to extend the ICU wards and ventilator services to PMC-run hospitals as well."

When asked when the services will start, Pawar said that the PMC officials will review the situation and a plan to start the services will be chalked out by Saturday.

Pawar said that the state government has not received any guidelines on conducting mass vaccination against swine flu. Till we receive the Union government's guidelines, we cannot initiate any steps in this regard. The district guardian minister, however, urged people from high risk groups to immediately undergo H1N1 vaccination.

He said that the administration had been asked to keep an eye on the supply of Tamiflu and vaccines, so that there would not be scarcity and black-marketing of tablets and vaccine. "Police action will be initiated if any serious complaints of malpractice in supply of Tamiflu and vaccines are found," said Pawar.
