PMC rejects hosp's plea to test 2 samples for Congo virus

PUNE: Five days after the state sounded an alert on the Congo virus which has already claimed three lives in neighbouring Gujarat, the authorities at the city-based Ratna Hospital are running from pillar to post in an attempt to get the samples of two suspected cases tested. The hospital says the two patients, both female students aged 20 and 23, have high-grade fever and haemorrhagic rash (red rash), classical symptoms of the virus. One of the women had even recently stayed for four months in Ahmedabad.
The hospital says the health department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is not willing to send the samples of the two women to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for testing. "We first approached the NIV, which asked us to send the samples through the PMC. However, the PMC health officials have not been responding to our requests to take the samples. We even sent them a letter, but they paid no heed," a hospital authority said.
