UPDATED: 12:41 pm EDT August 29, 2008

PITTSBURGH -- The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System confirms two cases of, Bordetella Pertussis, whooping cough in two employees at their University Drive location.

All individuals with confirmed and/or suspected cases of whooping cough have either completed or are taking a five-day course of azithromycin, an antibiotic highly active against whooping cough, and have been placed on sick leave.

Currently, 14 employees are on sick leave until they have completed a course of antibiotics and are well enough to work. At the present time, no Veteran's Hospital patients have become ill with whooping cough.

52 patients will be offered preventative treatment and 222 employees, residents, interns and medical students have been contacted to seek preventative treatment because of whooping cough exposure.
Antibiotic prophylaxis is highly effective at preventing illness if taken before the onset of symptoms

The Allegheny County Health Department and Pennsylvania Department of Health have been notified of confirmed and suspected cases.
