Flu cases surge early this year

The number of new flu cases has surged in Pima County the past three weeks which could make for a very long season.
A spike in flu cases usually doesn't happen until February or March in Tucson but this year is an exception.
Although we are not facing the possible flu pandemic we did last year, the numbers for this early in the year are pretty high.
In fact, the nearly 400 cases reported so far in Pima County are about the same as Maricopa County. There's no explanation for that but the Centers for Disease Control says although the outbreak in Arizona is not widespread it is regional.
It leads some experts here to believe with an early spike, it means the season could be much longer and more severe once February rolls around.
Then again maybe not...
