If a flu pandemic hit Pima County, how fast would every resident receive the flu vaccine?
The flu is here, and the Pima County Health Department knows of three people that have caught it so far. If you haven't received a flu shot you may want to reconsider.
?One cough, one sneeze can really spread,? says John Farlow of the Pima County Health Department.
There are world-wide fears of a flu pandemic. So for the first time, the Health department will do a pandemic preparedness exercise. They plan to give 500 children free flu shots in fewer than five hours this Saturday. The exercise will help determine how fast and how many flu vaccinations they could give in the event of a flu pandemic.
?The worst flu I ever had developed into pneumonia [on] Christmas,? says Tucson Resident Bob Loomis.
Loomis now gets a flu shot every year.
?It's critical that we protect this population,? says Farlow. ?We need to make sure that we can get the shot in people's bodies as quickly as possible so we can protect them.?
It's estimated 36,000 Americans die from complications of the flu on average each year, and over 200,000 people are hospitalized.
Free flu shots will be offered to children at the El Pueblo Neighborhood Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. All will be given on a first come first served basis.
