PIA regional heads, infocen managers undergo anti-bird flu workshop

Mandaluyong City (26 March) -- Around 70 regional heads and information center managers of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) all over the country have converged in Mandaluyong City recently for anti-bird flu campaign workshop.
Dubbed as workshop on communicating "Stay Bird Flu-Free Philippines" program, the participants were given basic information on the nature of Avian Influenza or commonly known as bird flu.
Dr. Rose Antegro, supervising agriculturist of the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) told the participants that the county is still free from bird flu-free, as no single case of avian influenza has ever been reported. She, however, said the country should not be complacent about it as the disease had already attacked the neighboring countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and others.
The disease can spread when domestic birds/fowls roam freely and share water supply that might be contaminated by infected droppings.
The virus can also spread through contaminated equipment, vehicles, feeds, cages or clothing especially the shoes.
Migratory birds can be carriers of the disease especially when they come from countries with cases of avian flu.
The workshop, which aimed to mainstream anti-bird flu campaign in PIA's programs and activities, was made possible through the help of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). (PIA Dipolog)
